New York, New York, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time
Job Overview

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Center for Justice Innovation is a non-profit entity dedicated to collaborating with communities and justice systems to promote equity, enhance safety, and empower individuals and neighborhoods. The Center aims to identify and address the challenges that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems as early as possible. This is achieved through various initiatives, including developing and implementing programs that minimize the need for incarceration and boost economic opportunities, conducting original research to determine effective practices, and disseminating insights gained from our programs and research to those seeking to reform the justice system globally.

The Center operates with a workforce of 900 employees and a budget of $100 million, realizing its mission through three core pillars: creating and scaling operational programs to explore innovative solutions, conducting original research to assess effectiveness, and offering expert assistance and policy guidance to justice reform advocates worldwide.

Operational Programs

The Center's operational programs, such as the acclaimed Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Justice Center, are designed to explore innovative solutions, tackle complex issues, and drive systemic change within the justice framework. Our initiatives encompass community-based violence prevention, alternatives to incarceration, reentry programs, and court-based efforts aimed at reducing unnecessary incarceration while fostering positive changes for individuals and families. These programs have yielded measurable outcomes, including safer neighborhoods, decreased incarceration rates, and improved community perceptions of justice.

Research Initiatives

The Center's research teams consist of social scientists, data analysts, and legal professionals, either academically trained or possessing lived experiences, who conduct research on a variety of criminal-legal system and justice issues both domestically and internationally. Their work involves evaluating programs and policies, conducting exploratory community-based studies, and translating research into actionable strategies for system stakeholders. The Center has published findings on various topics, including court and jail reform, intimate partner violence, restorative justice, gun violence, reentry, sixth amendment rights, and progressive prosecution. The research teams strive to ensure their work is meaningful and applicable to the communities they serve, as well as to policymakers and practitioners.

Policy and Expert Support

The Center provides practical planning and implementation support to various jurisdictions focusing on reform areas such as problem-solving courts (e.g., community courts, treatment courts, domestic violence courts), tribal justice, and strategies to reduce incarceration and crime. Our expert assistance encompasses data analysis, strategic planning, policy guidance, and hosting visits to our operational programs.

Support Structure

A dedicated support team within the Center ensures seamless operations across multiple domains, including finance, legal, technology, human resources, fundraising, real estate, and communications. Comprising 15% of the organization’s workforce, these teams deliver essential infrastructure support and innovative solutions aligned with the Center's mission and values.

THE ROLE

The Midtown Community Justice Center, launched in 1993, is recognized as one of the pioneering problem-solving courts in the nation. Aiming to decrease crime and incarceration while enhancing public trust in the justice system, the Midtown Community Justice Center collaborates with local stakeholders to improve the Midtown Manhattan area. The court creatively addresses low-level offenses, seeking restorative alternatives for the community. Additionally, Midtown operates proactive programs to divert adults and youth from prosecution.

The justice system is more robust, equitable, and effective with community involvement. At the Justice Center, we engage residents and workers in the Midtown Manhattan area to identify local challenges and devise solutions. The Justice Center employs a participatory planning approach, empowering local leaders, community members, participants, and stakeholders to become change agents in their neighborhoods and collaboratively address local issues. Community members include individuals who live, work, and seek services in Midtown. The Justice Center aims to strengthen relationships with these stakeholders, as well as with local police precincts, schools, service providers, and community organizations.

Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Community Partnerships Coordinator will facilitate the growth of the Justice Center's partnership network and serve as a liaison with service provider partners, community leaders, the business community in Midtown, local Business Improvement Districts, public housing developments, schools, police precincts, and more. Responsibilities include managing the Justice Center's social media presence, coordinating tours and site visits, fostering corporate partnerships, engaging volunteers, and developing educational initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Organize community-oriented activities and events, including workshops, tabling, and resource fairs in collaboration with program staff;
  • Build relationships with organizations, including City agencies, community service providers, criminal legal system stakeholders, elected officials' offices, schools, and local businesses;
  • Facilitate community discussions with diverse groups to gather insights and share resources;
  • Attend and coordinate the Justice Center's presence at community board meetings, precinct community council meetings, and other relevant gatherings;
  • Engage with local NYCHA tenant associations and manage the Justice Center's interactions with public housing developments in Midtown;
  • Collaborate with program coordinators and senior leadership to identify volunteer opportunities, recruit, and manage volunteers;
  • Develop and maintain corporate partnerships;
  • Work with program coordinators to create and maintain a database of referral partners;
  • Enhance the Justice Center's social media visibility and manage its accounts;
  • Establish methods for collecting feedback from local residents, program alumni, and criminal legal system stakeholders to assess the Justice Center's responsiveness to public safety and community concerns;
  • Foster relationships with local schools and youth-serving organizations, providing education on justice-related topics through site visits, presentations, and written materials;
  • Coordinate site visits to the Justice Center, collaborating with senior staff, presiding judges, program staff, clerks, and court officers to set agendas and communicate with visitors;
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration with external partners and enhance community awareness of the Justice Center's initiatives;
  • Perform additional tasks as required.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years of experience in a related field, preferably in community engagement, organizing, or community development. The candidate should be an exceptional communicator, passionate, skilled, and experienced in working with communities to promote health and safety. Other qualifications include:
  • Proven success in managing logistics, setting, and achieving project goals efficiently in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary setting, fostering collaborative relationships with colleagues and communicating well with various department leaders;
  • Excellent facilitation skills to identify community issues, needs, feedback, and preferences promptly;
  • Strong project and time management abilities, highly organized, detail-oriented, and meticulous about quality and accuracy;
  • A dynamic personality with a strong desire to lead and public speaking capabilities;
  • Exceptional analytical, written, and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with governmental and community agencies, non-profit organizations, businesses, and community groups;
  • Experience in community organizing, grassroots advocacy, and lobbying efforts;
  • Strong aptitude for interpreting data and identifying trends;
  • Ability to engage with diverse communities in an empathetic and non-judgmental manner;
  • Flexible schedule with availability for occasional evenings and weekends;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Suite.

Position Type: Full-time, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm with occasional evenings and weekends.

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $62,400 - $72,000, commensurate with experience. The Center for Justice Innovation offers a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare with a national network, basic dental coverage, vision insurance, short-term and long-term disability, life insurance, and flexible spending accounts. We prioritize mental health care for our staff and provide services through our healthcare plans. A 403(b) retirement plan with a two-to-one employer contribution up to 5% is also available.
