Job Overview

Position Title: Veterinary Services Assistant II (VSAII)

Status: Non-exempt

Primary Objective: Responsible for the assessment and healthcare of all animals while providing essential technical support for veterinary services, including sterilization procedures, medical treatments, and humane euthanasia.

Reports To: Veterinary Services Manager

Supervises: Volunteers as necessary

Key Responsibilities:
  • Animal Health Evaluation and Care: Conducts daily health and behavioral assessments. Administers vaccinations and other treatments as required. Evaluates animals daily for adoption readiness.
  • Support for Surgical Procedures and Medical Care: Assists with anesthesia, surgical preparation, and monitoring of animals during sterilization in accordance with established procedures. Maintains cleanliness and organization of the surgical suite. Responsible for the humane euthanasia of animals, ensuring compliance with relevant procedures and laws.
  • Data Entry and Monitoring: Records daily activities in the PetPoint database and compiles monthly statistical reports as directed.
  • Management of Medical Supplies: Oversees medical supplies, ensuring proper storage and usage of clinic resources and equipment.
  • Client and Animal Interaction: Engages with individuals utilizing services in a professional and courteous manner. Ensures all animals are treated with compassion and respect.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Operational Support: Provides feeding, watering, and monitoring of all animals as needed. Cleans and disinfects animal enclosures and supplies. Actively participates in departmental meetings to contribute ideas and suggestions.
  • Other Assigned Duties: Promotes a positive public image and enhances organizational operations to improve the quality of life for animals. May involve participation in events, serving as a spokesperson, fundraising, and supporting various operational departments.
Work Environment:
  • Conditions: Outdoor work in various weather conditions; indoor work in kennel and office settings.
  • Equipment Utilization: Utilizes leashes, hoses, cleaning supplies, computers, phones, veterinary instruments, and other necessary equipment.
  • Work Hours: Must be available full-time with flexibility for weekends and holidays based on operational needs.
Demands:
  • Requires a strong passion for animal welfare and a commitment to the organization's goals and programs.
  • Must be capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Comfort in handling, transporting, and administering veterinary care to live animals is essential.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Familiarity with common diseases and medical conditions affecting various animal species is preferred.
Qualifications:
  • Skills/Knowledge: General handling and understanding of various animal species, their behaviors, physical needs, and common medical conditions. Knowledge of routine veterinary care and emergency treatment is essential.
  • Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent is required; a Bachelor's degree in a related field (Animal Science, Biology) is preferred. Certification as a Veterinary Technician is advantageous.
  • Experience: A minimum of two years working as a veterinary assistant or technician in a clinical or animal shelter environment is preferred.
