Job Title: Veterinary Services Assistant II (VSAII)
Status: Non-exempt
Core Objective: To conduct assessments and provide healthcare for all animals while offering technical assistance for veterinary services, including sterilization procedures, medical care, and humane euthanasia.
Reports To: Veterinary Services Manager
Supervises: Volunteers as necessary
Key Responsibilities:- Animal Health Evaluation and Care: Conducts daily health and behavioral assessments. Administers vaccinations and other treatments as required. Assesses animals daily for adoption readiness.
- Support for Surgical Procedures and Medical Care: Assists with anesthesia, surgical preparation, and monitoring of animals during sterilization in accordance with established procedures. Responsible for cleaning and organizing the surgical suite as needed. Performs euthanasia and manages the usage of euthanasia solutions following organizational protocols and legal requirements.
- Data Entry and Monitoring: Records daily activities in the PetPoint database and compiles monthly statistical reports as instructed.
- Management of Medical Supplies: Oversees medical supplies and ensures proper storage and usage of clinic resources and equipment.
- Client and Animal Interaction: Engages with clients who utilize services in a professional and courteous manner. Ensures all animals are treated with compassion and respect.
- Operational Support: Responsible for feeding, watering, and monitoring the condition of all animals as necessary. Cleans and disinfects animal enclosures and equipment. Actively participates in departmental meetings to share insights and suggestions.
- Other Assigned Duties: Contributes to maintaining a positive public image and enhancing the organization's operations to improve animal welfare. May involve organization-wide support, including participation in events, serving as a spokesperson, fundraising, and assisting in various operational departments.
- Conditions: Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions and indoors in standard kennel and office environments.
- Equipment Utilized: Includes leashes, hoses, cleaning supplies, computers, telecommunication devices, veterinary medications, instruments, copiers, and calculators.
- Work Hours: Based on operational needs, full-time availability is required, including flexibility for weekends and holidays.
- Skills and Knowledge: Proficient in handling and understanding various animal species, their behaviors, physical needs, and common medical conditions. Familiarity with routine veterinary care and emergency treatment is essential.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required; a Bachelor's degree in a related field (Animal Science, Biology) is preferred. Certification as a Veterinary Technician is advantageous.
- Experience: A minimum of two years working as a veterinary assistant or technician in a clinical or animal shelter setting is preferred.
