Position Overview
Are you in search of a role that provides consistent hours while contributing positively to the community? Do you enjoy engaging with children? Are you looking for a way to remain active while making a difference in the lives of school-aged children and their families?
If your answer is "Yes," then consider the position of Community Safety Officer.
In this role, you will guide children safely to and from school across various streets and intersections. The City of Garland offers comprehensive training, and you will enjoy weekends, holidays, and summers off.
*Work Schedule*
- Community Safety Officers work two hours each day, Monday through Friday.
- One hour in the morning from 7:15 am - 8:15 am and one hour in the afternoon from 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm.
Key Responsibilities
- Utilize symbols, signs, or hand/arm signals to indicate that vehicles must stop for children crossing the streets/intersections.
- Instruct children to wait behind the curb until it is safe to cross.
- Guide children across streets/intersections.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of children during their journey to and from school.
- Completion of 8th Grade.
- No prior experience necessary.
- Minimum corrected vision of 20/40 in each eye and corrected hearing of 30 decibels at hertz.
Preferred Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- 1-2 years of relevant experience.
- Basic understanding of traffic laws, ordinances, regulations, and safety protocols.
- Ability to use a whistle, hold signs, flags, etc., as required.
- Capacity to make sound decisions regarding the safety and well-being of children.
- Ability to communicate simple verbal or written instructions.
- Ability to perform the physical tasks required.
No specific licenses or certifications required.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
The typical work environment is primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to varying temperatures, precipitation, humidity, and traffic hazards. Must be able to walk at a rate of 4 feet per second for a distance of 160 feet.
The shift consists of a one-hour morning period from 7 am to 8 am and a one-hour afternoon period from 3 pm to 4 pm, totaling two hours per day.
