Position Overview: The Senior Accountant will support the month-end, quarterly, and annual financial closing processes and reconciliations for the Athletic Department's operational funds.

This role involves conducting various financial analyses, processing journal entries on intricate financial statement line items, and overseeing the enhancement of key Business Office procedures, policies, and internal controls.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare general ledger reconciliations and financial analyses, including but not limited to deferred revenue and other balance sheet items, ticket sales, spectator admissions revenues, preferred seat contributions, concessions, parking revenues, facilities operations revenues and expenses, and other operational and administrative expenses.

Assist in the preparation of financial reports required by the University Regents, the University Office of Business and Finance, the NCAA, the Big Ten Conference, the Athletic Department Leadership team, the Department of Education (EADA), and other regulatory bodies.

Contribute to the preparation of the Athletic Department's external financial statements and participate in all relevant audit processes, providing information requested by auditors.

Additional Duties:

  • Prepare, process, and review technical journal entries related to significant financial statement line items.
  • Conduct internal control procedures, prepare the University's Gap Analysis, and assist in monitoring and enhancing accounting policies and procedures.
  • Support month-end and year-end financial closing processes to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist in the development and preparation of the annual operating budget and monitor budget-to-actual activities, including strategy discussions and planning, communication with the Business Office and other Athletic Department units, compilation and review of unit-submitted budget templates, and presentation.
  • Prepare documentation and analysis required for the University's Unrelated Business Income Tax return.
  • Act as a budget liaison for assigned budget units.
  • Perform various Business Office day-to-day duties and any other tasks assigned by the Finance Manager.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

A minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience in a public accounting firm or accounting department of a large and complex organization. Experience in preparing journal entries and account reconciliations is essential.

Strong technical knowledge in GAAP accounting and financial reporting is required. Familiarity with automated financial systems, query tools for data extraction, and proficiency in administrative and financial information systems and various software applications is necessary.

Experience in implementing and maintaining robust internal controls, along with strong analytical skills to evaluate all financial aspects of the Athletic Department budget, is crucial.

Demonstrated competence with Microsoft Office Suite software and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities in a dynamic environment is expected.

Strong organizational, communication, writing, and interpersonal skills, along with a high level of personal integrity and ethics, are essential.

Desired Qualifications:

  • CPA certification.

Experience in intercollegiate athletics or a university setting, as well as familiarity with GASB accounting and PeopleSoft general ledger software, is preferred.
