Position Overview

The Senior Accountant will play a crucial role in supporting the month-end, quarterly, and annual financial closing processes and reconciliations for the Athletic Department's operational funds.

This position involves conducting various financial analyses, processing journal entries for complex financial statement line items, and overseeing the enhancement of key Business Office procedures, policies, and internal controls.

The Senior Accountant will also assist in preparing financial reports required by the Athletic Department Leadership Team, regulatory bodies, and other relevant agencies.

Additionally, this role will participate in the external financial statement audit and contribute to the development and preparation of the annual operating budget.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare reconciliations of the general ledger and conduct financial analyses, including deferred revenue and other balance sheet items, ticket sales, spectator admissions, preferred seat contributions, concessions, parking revenues, and various operational and administrative expenses.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial reports required by regulatory bodies and the Athletic Department Leadership Team.
  • Support the preparation of external financial statements for the Athletic Department.
  • Engage in all relevant audit processes and provide necessary information to auditors.
  • Prepare, process, and review technical journal entries related to significant financial statement line items.
  • Implement internal control procedures, prepare the University's Gap Analysis, and assist in monitoring and enhancing accounting policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to month-end and year-end financial closing processes to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist in the development and preparation of the annual operating budget and monitor budget-to-actual activities, including strategic discussions and planning.
  • Prepare documentation and analysis for the University's Unrelated Business Income Tax return.
  • Act as a budget liaison for assigned budget units.
  • Perform various day-to-day Business Office duties and any other tasks assigned by the Finance Manager.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in a public accounting firm or a large, complex organization.
  • Experience in preparing journal entries and reconciling statements of account.
  • Strong technical knowledge of GAAP accounting and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency with automated financial systems and various software applications.
  • Experience in implementing and maintaining robust internal controls.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate all financial aspects of the Athletic Department budget.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of personal integrity and ethics.
Desired Qualifications
  • CPA certification.
  • Experience in intercollegiate athletics or a university setting.
  • Familiarity with GASB accounting.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft general ledger software and Business Objects data warehouse querying software.
