JOB SUMMARY
This role assists the transportation manager/director in overseeing the operations related to deliveries and backhauls.

This includes mentoring and managing transportation department personnel, ensuring compliance with governmental regulations, and fostering a culture of safety and security within the transportation division.


RESPONSIBILITIES


Oversees the daily operations and safety of transportation personnel, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures, Food Safety Standards, and preferred work methods, while maintaining planned routes and delivering safe and efficient customer service.

Ensures that transportation personnel comply with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies (i.e., DOT, OSHA, etc.) and that electronic logs are maintained accurately and up-to-date.

Manages labor hours and consumable supplies within budgetary constraints.

Creates work schedules, including additional workdays and shifts as necessary.

Assists in training new personnel, including cross-training existing staff.

Directs the appropriate selection and utilization of company resources in support of the delivery department.

Coordinates necessary repairs with relevant departments as required.

Reviews delivery functions and productivity reports; proposes efficiency improvements, cost-saving measures, and assists in implementing delivery modifications.


Interprets, instructs, and consistently enforces company policies, protocols, and procedures, including but not limited to food safety, DOT regulations, and record-keeping.

Collaborates with warehouse and customer service teams to resolve any customer or delivery challenges.

Visits customer locations to address concerns and evaluate delivery challenges.

Maintains positive employee relations through regular departmental or pre-shift meetings.

Ensures open communication channels with staff by addressing questions and clarifying policies and procedures.

Monitors employee morale and actively submits and responds to suggestions for enhancing employee engagement and enablement.


Works with the safety manager to assist in training, conducting employee observations, updating preferred work methods, conducting accident investigations to identify root causes, and performing routine safety inspections.

Makes recommendations for corrective actions and/or behavior modifications as necessary.

Performs management functions including staff selection, development, discipline, performance evaluations, and/or terminations.


Adheres to the assigned schedule, demonstrating regular and predictable attendance, and works outside of normal hours as required to meet workload demands.

Performs the duties of supervised associates and other related tasks as needed (and as qualified).

QUALIFICATIONS
Education

High school diploma, general education degree (GED), or equivalent; or a combination of education and related experience.

2 or 4-year college degree in business management, supply chain management, or a related field preferred.

Experience

2-4 years of transportation experience and/or training.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

Class A Commercial Driver's License is preferred but not mandatory.

Certificate of DOT regulations training is preferred.

Professional Skills


Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, DOT rules and regulations; preferred work methods and standard operating procedures (SOP); spreadsheet software and word processing software.

Skilled in making independent decisions in accordance with company policies and procedures in a timely manner.

Ability to effectively engage and lead individual and team discussions and meetings.

Capable of solving practical problems and interpreting a variety of instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Applies all relevant policies consistently, timely, and objectively.


Works in a disciplined manner and adheres to established procedures, practices, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Manages the pressures and stress associated with a deadline-oriented environment and customer service challenges.

Learn SYGMA technology software and programs.

Read, comprehend, write, and speak English.

Able to perform basic arithmetic operations using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Can read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations.

Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Effectively present information and respond to inquiries from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
