Staff Engineer, Performance and Capacity Optimization

About the Role

We're seeking a highly skilled Staff Engineer to join our Capacity and Performance Engineering (CPE) Team at Cruise. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for driving efficiency initiatives and developing tooling to automate infrastructure optimization. Your expertise in high-performance compute clusters, scheduler logic, and resource contention tradeoff will be instrumental in improving the scalability and efficiency of our infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide in-depth visibility into infrastructure utilization and performance metrics
  • Identify and address gaps in infrastructure efficiency and workflow optimization
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to conduct capacity and performance experiments and resolve potential bottlenecks
  • Work closely with software engineers to reduce cloud resource consumption and improve performance
  • Partner with cloud service providers to negotiate and retain necessary SKUs and capabilities for efficient scale and capacity readiness
  • Present efficiency opportunities and project cost savings to the Cruise executive team
  • Design, develop, and lead automation to help capacity plan for both near and long-term needs
Requirements
  • Familiarity with HPC clusters, compute platforms, and cloud infrastructure
  • 8+ years of experience in capacity or performance engineering
  • 5+ years of experience managing teams
  • Expert application performance experience
  • Expert knowledge of various public cloud providers
  • Expertise in data modeling for public cloud
  • Expertise in budgeting and capacity planning
  • Expertise in SQL, Python, scripting, and building automation tools
  • Self-disciplined and thrives in a fast-moving environment
  • Excellent communication skills
