Position Overview

The Specialized Education Support Assistant plays a crucial role in aiding students who require instructional and behavioral support under the guidance of the special education department or designated supervisor. This position may also involve providing essential support services to assist students with personal care, physical mobility, and therapeutic needs as outlined by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement Individualized Education Program (IEP) objectives, focusing on areas such as mathematics, literacy, communication, and social skills, either individually or as part of a classroom team.
  • Support teacher-led educational activities, including lesson execution, material preparation, and small group facilitation.
  • Assist students integrated into general education settings.
  • Relay important information to educators regarding student progress and needs.
  • Supervise students during recess, lunch, and community activities.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality concerning all student-related matters, ensuring privacy in communications and classroom activities.
  • Contribute to the implementation of prescribed programs developed by related service providers, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists.
  • Encourage the development of independent living skills through assistance with self-care tasks such as toileting, dressing, feeding, and hygiene.
  • Support behavior management strategies as directed by educational professionals.
  • Assist educators with administrative tasks, including creating instructional materials, copying documents, and maintaining an organized classroom environment.
  • Provide support with student mobility and transfers.
  • Report any changes in student status or needs as directed by IEP or Individualized Health Plans (IHP).

Qualifications:

  • Adherence to all relevant professional standards and practices.
  • Completion of Amergis' Competency program as required.
  • Current CPR certification, if applicable.
  • Completion of TB questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray as necessary.
  • Valid health certificate in accordance with contractual or state regulations.
  • Compliance with all federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Successful completion of onboarding training relevant to the position.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively exchange information with supervisors, colleagues, and clients; proficiency in English is essential.
  • Proficiency in computer skills is required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
