Position Summary

This position is based at our Safety Assessment facilities located in various regions.

The Veterinary Clinical Specialist will oversee the provision of expert veterinary services and support the management of all aspects of health care for our animal population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver clinical care for the animal population.
  • Conduct scheduled veterinary rounds, providing clinical care and preventive health support.
  • Offer surgical assistance and provide anesthesia, surgical, and analgesic expertise to facilitate protocol execution.
  • Assist in developing and delivering training programs for staff, covering veterinary diagnostics, techniques, and minor surgical procedures.
  • Provide guidance on animal health care for veterinary services personnel as needed.
  • Prepare and submit reports and other required documentation.
  • Participate in internal and external inspections and quality assurance audits related to veterinary or animal welfare matters.
  • Support the activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), including protocol and program reviews, as well as facility inspections.
  • Draft, review, and update veterinary care and necropsy standard operating procedures (SOPs) as necessary.
  • Conduct literature reviews on veterinary-related topics.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, guidelines, and standards pertaining to animal care and use (e.g., USDA, FDA, AAALAC).
  • Recommend and assist in establishing and enhancing veterinary and animal care standards.
  • Handle controlled substances and maintain accurate records as required.
  • Develop innovative surgical techniques or procedural enhancements suitable for research studies.
  • Assist in managing the activities of the assigned section, including directing junior staff, scheduling, and personnel development for the veterinary technical team and husbandry staff.
  • Engage in special projects and support administrative tasks as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • This role may involve domestic and international travel to provide support to other facilities within our network.
  • Provide training in areas related to nonhuman primate health and welfare, as well as veterinary and technical training.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Veterinary degree (D.V.M./V.M.D.).
  • Experience: Up to two years of relevant experience in animal care and surgical techniques, with a strong preference for experience in a research/laboratory animal/GLP environment.
  • Certification/Licensure: Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state, with the ability to practice in the work state being highly desirable. USDA accreditation or application submission within one month of hire is required.
  • Other: Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills.
