Position Summary
This position is available at our Safety Assessment facilities located in various regions.
The Veterinary Clinical Specialist will provide essential veterinary services and oversee the health management of our animal population.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver clinical care to the animal population.
- Conduct scheduled veterinary rounds, offering clinical support and preventive health care.
- Provide surgical assistance and anesthesia expertise to support protocol development.
- Develop and conduct training programs for staff, focusing on veterinary diagnostics and surgical techniques.
- Offer guidance on animal health care to veterinary services personnel as needed.
- Prepare and submit necessary reports and documentation.
- Participate in internal and external inspections and quality assurance audits related to veterinary and animal welfare.
- Support the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) in protocol and program reviews, and facility inspections.
- Draft, review, and update veterinary care and necropsy standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Conduct literature reviews on veterinary topics.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards pertaining to animal care and use.
- Make recommendations to enhance veterinary and animal care standards.
- Manage controlled substances and maintain accurate records.
- Innovate surgical techniques or procedural improvements for research studies.
- Assist in managing the activities of the assigned section, including directing junior staff and scheduling.
- Engage in special projects and administrative tasks as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- This role may involve travel to provide support to other facilities.
- Support training in nonhuman primate health and welfare, as well as veterinary and technical training.
Qualifications:
- Education: Veterinary degree (D.V.M./V.M.D.).
- Experience: 0-2 years of relevant experience in animal care and surgical techniques, preferably in a research or laboratory animal environment.
- Certification: Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state, with a strong preference for licensure in the work state. USDA accreditation or application within one month of hire is required.
- Skills: Proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, and database software. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential.
