POSITION OVERVIEW FOR ENGLISH AS A NEW LANGUAGE (ENL) TEACHER (K-5)

In this role, under the guidance of the principal, the ENL teacher is responsible for delivering essential services to identified English Language Learners and students requiring targeted interventions. The ENL teacher will conduct small group sessions and collaborate within classrooms, working alongside general education teachers. The primary goal is to provide specialized instruction that ensures English language learners progress in their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills while accessing the FLACS K-5 curriculum, in alignment with New York State Next Generation Learning Standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and implement academically challenging, standards-aligned, and culturally responsive lesson plans that promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while providing necessary supports for English language acquisition.
  • Employ student-centered instructional techniques to engage learners and tailor teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of students, ensuring access to grade-level content.
  • Collaborate and co-teach with general education colleagues.
  • Analyze data from ongoing assessments to refine instructional methods and enhance student outcomes.
  • Maintain effective classroom management and adhere to school-wide policies to foster a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Establish a classroom culture that promotes respect, inclusion, and high academic expectations, nurturing a love for learning and building positive relationships.
  • Assess student work, provide constructive feedback, and ensure timely communication of grades to students and families through online systems.
  • Actively engage with students to understand their strengths and areas for growth, effectively communicating this information to families.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, collaborative learning communities, and school-wide events.
  • Share effective practices with peers through participation in professional learning communities and collaborative teams.
  • Manage both regulatory and instructional responsibilities as an ENL educator.
  • Administer Home Language Questionnaires and NYSITELL assessments to determine eligibility for ENL services.
  • Conduct the annual NYSESLAT assessment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Previous satisfactory teaching experience is preferred.
  • New York State Teaching Certification in English to Speakers of Other Languages (all grades) is required.
  • Successful completion of fingerprint and criminal background checks is mandatory.
