About the Role

As a key member of the Revenue Cycle team at University Hospitals, the Access Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring accurate and timely patient registration, insurance verification, and billing processes. This position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Verify patient demographics and insurance information using multiple complex applications and electronic eligibility tools.
  • Execute patient estimates, educate guarantors regarding charges and out-of-pocket liability, and establish payment plans when applicable.
  • Collect and post co-pays, deductibles, co-insurance, and prior balances due from patients in accordance with policy.
  • Prevent medical record duplications or incorrect patient selection, safeguarding Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Utilize electronic reports, worklists, and queues to identify claims requiring updating and make corrections as needed.
  • Schedule professional and technical patient appointments using multiple software applications.
  • Verify insurance benefits/coverage using electronic eligibility tools and initiate appropriate action to complete a Notice of Admission (NOA).
  • Complete daily reconciliation of the Important Medicare Message (IMM) and Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire (MSPQ) in accordance with Government regulations.
  • Participate in wayfinding, provide directions or transport as needed to ensure a positive patient/customer experience.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a healthcare or revenue cycle setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance billing processes.
