POSITION OVERVIEW

The Financial Counselor plays a crucial role in managing financial clearance operations, which encompass verifying insurance eligibility and benefits, securing authorizations, and providing cost estimates. This role is essential in resolving billing disputes that necessitate extensive interaction with patients. Additionally, the Financial Counselor acts as a subject matter expert on financial assistance policies, facilitates point-of-service collections, and supports various special projects.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborates closely with facility leadership to ensure comprehensive financial clearance and screening for all patients.
  • Conducts interviews with patients to gather essential demographic and financial information for registration, insurance verification, pre-certification, and billing processes.
  • Accurately records patient demographic data while reviewing past accounts and accounts with future service dates.
  • Adheres to and implements complex system policies, including financial assistance, limited plans, point-of-service, and out-of-network guidelines.
  • Collects and evaluates guarantor financial information for assistance eligibility and refers patients to appropriate public assistance resources.
  • Provides detailed estimates for procedures and services, calculates payment obligations, and negotiates pre-service payments in line with financial clearance protocols.
  • Establishes payment plans for both upcoming and past services.
  • Reviews future schedules to confirm that pre-authorizations and pre-payments have been successfully collected.
  • Assists in liaising with physician offices and patients to ensure that pre-authorization and referral requirements are satisfied prior to service dates.
  • Analyzes and interprets explanations of benefits from payers to help patients and guarantors understand claims processing or service denials.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in healthcare or equivalent educational background.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong listening, interpersonal, and communication skills, with a professional and courteous telephone manner.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in high-stress and emotionally charged environments, including those involving crime, behavioral health, and critically ill patients.
  • Exhibits a high level of empathy and effectively communicates with patients and families during challenging situations, showcasing exceptional customer service skills.
  • Proficient in managing multiple and shifting priorities in an organized and effective manner.
  • Excellent data entry, numerical, typing, and computer navigation skills.
  • Basic proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and Excel.
