Job Profile Summary:
Conducts moderate to complex specimen procedures in the realms of anatomical and surgical pathology, as well as immunohistochemistry.

Supervises one or more technical areas, ensuring compliance with regulations, managing new method project plans, facilitating technical communications, and maintaining cost-effective inventory control.

Acts as a mentor for students and new hires, engages in system competency development, and assists in the direct observation of staff for annual competency evaluations.

Functions as a liaison to system Technical Specialist and serves as Charge Tech in the absence of Lead/Supervisor/Manager.

CLIA Role:
Testing Personnel for Moderate and High Complexity testing.

Job Description:
Principal Responsibilities include performing routine and intricate laboratory procedures.
Executes all standard histology tasks that facilitate the production of microscopic slides for pathologist interpretation.

Handles tissue specimen accessioning, supports Pathologist Assistants, sections frozen tissue with a cryostat, processes and embeds tissue specimens, conducts microtomy and staining, prepares solutions and stains, completes specialty testing utilizing histochemical and/or immunohistochemical techniques, and implements quality control measures.

Evaluates specimen integrity for testing and processing, ensuring accurate patient identification and secure specimen handling.

Reviews results for precision and resolves complex testing issues.
Conducts and documents necessary instrument maintenance and quality control; takes appropriate corrective actions.
Ensures proper record keeping and retention.
Maintains oversight as a key operator across multiple work areas.
Identifies problems and implements effective solutions while demonstrating excellent customer service skills.
May assist with biopsy collection.
Ensures accurate and timely specimen processing.
Reviews orders and verifies correct patient labeling.
Processes specimens adhering strictly to quality control and assurance policies.
Upholds safety, education, and competency standards.
Functions as Charge Tech in the absence of Lead/Supervisor/Manager.
Manages inventory by stocking, rotating, and requesting supplies.
Communicates complex departmental issues with Technical Specialist, Manager, or Pathologist.
Participates in direct observation of staff for annual competency evaluations.
May contribute to procedure writing, validation, and implementation of new methodologies as directed by Technical Specialist.
Serves as a trainer for new employees.
Engages in departmental or system-wide meetings, projects, or committees as assigned.
Performs various clerical tasks.
Involved in the training of employees and students.
Conducts proficiency testing as assigned.
Assists in Direct Observations of staff for annual competency evaluations.

Job Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in histotechnology or a related science from an accredited institution, along with completion of a clinical internship is required.

Histotechnologist, HTL certification by a recognized agency such as ASCP or NCA within 180 Days required.
