Richmond, Virginia, United States Commonwealth of Virginia Full time
Unit Mission:

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is dedicated to advancing the treatment of medical conditions through a comprehensive understanding of pharmacological agents and the development of safer, more effective pharmaceuticals.

We are seeking highly driven non-tenure-track Research Assistant Professors to collaborate within the laboratory of Dr. Said Sebti at the NCI designated Massey Cancer Center (MCC) and the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. The laboratory's research aims to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms by which normal cells transform into malignant ones and to translate these insights into clinical applications. Candidates will engage in innovative, interdisciplinary research projects focused on understanding the aberrant oncogenic KRAS signaling pathways in cancer and designing novel anti-cancer therapeutics based on these findings.

Key Research Projects Include:

1. Investigating the mechanisms of mutant KRAS dependency and developing targeted therapies for mutant KRAS-driven malignancies.
2. Discovering small molecules that interact with KRAS and studying their effects on oncogenesis.
3. Identifying kinases that exhibit synthetic lethality with mutant KRAS.
4. Characterizing cell surface proteins uniquely expressed in human cancers reliant on mutant KRAS, and formulating therapeutic strategies based on these insights.
5. Developing dual FTase and GGTase-1 inhibitors as innovative anti-cancer agents targeting tumors with mutant KRAS.

Position Objectives:

As a member of Dr. Sebti's team, the candidate is expected to collaborate effectively within the lab on the aforementioned research areas. Candidates will also be responsible for preparing grant applications for peer-reviewed external funding.

As part of the cancer center, the candidate will engage in research activities that align with the MCC's vision and mission: to enhance the health of all Virginians through cutting-edge cancer care, innovative research, community engagement, and the education of future researchers and healthcare professionals. The Massey Cancer Center aspires to be a leading community-focused institution, championing cancer health equity and ensuring optimal health outcomes for all.

In their role within the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the School of Medicine, the candidate will also contribute to teaching responsibilities, including co-teaching courses at the medical and graduate levels. The candidate will mentor graduate students pursuing M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and participate in departmental and university-wide service committees.

Responsibilities:

Research: Conduct cancer research activities that are in line with the MCC's vision and mission. Submit and secure peer-reviewed grants, preferably R-type grants from NCI. Publish research findings in high-impact journals. Collaborate closely with Dr. Sebti to leverage the extensive intellectual and scientific resources available to address national cancer challenges.

Teaching and Mentorship: Contribute to the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology by fulfilling teaching responsibilities, including co-teaching medical and graduate courses. Mentor and train graduate students pursuing M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

Service: Participate as a member of departmental and university-wide service committees.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. with a minimum of 8 years of extensive experience in cancer molecular biology, biochemistry, cancer cell biology, drug discovery, and/or pharmacology. Profound understanding of Ras signaling pathways. Experience with in vitro assays and in vivo animal models related to drug discovery. Ability to maintain meticulous documentation through electronic and notebook methods. Demonstrated creativity, strong motivation, effective communication skills, and experience in writing progress reports and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications. Extensive publication record. Experience in multidisciplinary fields. Commitment to diversity or a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity as a faculty member. Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a matrix environment within academic medicine. Proven success in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrated mentorship skills for trainees and faculty. Experience working closely with chemists, structural biologists, and clinical researchers. About the Commonwealth of Virginia:

The Commonwealth of Virginia is recognized for its commitment to education and research, with a diverse student population and a focus on community engagement. The mission of the educational institutions within Virginia is to provide exceptional education to future physicians and scientists, enhancing the quality of healthcare for all.
