Position Overview:


The Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) plays a crucial role in the Activities Therapy department by overseeing the creation, execution, and management of daily recreational assessments and group activities.

The CTRS is tasked with evaluating, planning, and implementing treatment, as well as providing education to patients and their families. This includes adapting recreational activities for individuals facing challenges in physical, emotional, cognitive, or social areas due to various dysfunctions.

Services offered by the CTRS encompass leisure education, skill development, self-confidence enhancement, social integration, community reintegration, relaxation techniques, and perceptual motor skills improvement.

Interventions are delivered in both individual and group formats, and travel may be necessary to provide services across different facilities.

The CTRS collaborates with the facility's Director of Clinical Services (DCS) to ensure optimal staffing and budget management while adhering to essential quality measures to maintain program integrity.

This overview highlights the primary responsibilities and duties of the role, though it is not exhaustive of all tasks that may be assigned.

Qualifications:


  • Willingness to travel as required for the position.
  • Preferred membership in a relevant professional organization.

Educational Background / Licensure:

  • A Master's degree in Recreation Therapy or a related discipline is mandatory.
  • Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist is required (if not already certified, must obtain within six months of employment).
  • Certification from the Council for Therapeutic Recreation must be achieved upon hiring or within the first year of employment, with ongoing maintenance of certification.

5 years of clinical experience in direct care within an acute psychiatric stabilization environment is preferred.

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is necessary, aligned with unit-specific requirements and adhering to the American Heart Association's Healthcare Provider Program.
