Position Overview

The Child Life Specialist plays a crucial role in providing essential information, education, and emotional support to families, including parents and siblings. This position focuses on fostering effective coping mechanisms, facilitating play, and promoting self-expression activities for children undergoing various healthcare challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Develops, implements, and assesses both short-term and long-term objectives to address the psychosocial and developmental needs of pediatric and neonatal patients. Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to educate patients and their families while formulating and executing comprehensive care plans. Works in conjunction with relevant departments to organize and carry out special activities and events aimed at normalizing the hospital experience for patients and their families. Acts as an advocate for patients and families, embodying the principles of family-centered care. Aids in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of in-service educational programs. Partners with Child Life Assistants and Volunteer Services to recruit and assess volunteers as necessary. Provides guidance and oversight to student interns within the Child Life Department. Supports the onboarding and mentoring of new staff members and Child Life interns.

Physical Demands

The role requires physical activities such as walking, standing, sitting, lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Candidates must be capable of lifting and supporting up to 51 pounds, which includes handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree in Human Growth and Development, Education, Psychology, or a related field is required. Experience with a student placement or internship in a Child Life Program within a healthcare environment is mandatory. Current Child Life Certification is essential. Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with effective organizational and time management abilities, are required.
