Position Overview

The role of the Child Life Specialist is to deliver essential information, education, and emotional support to families navigating healthcare challenges. This position emphasizes the importance of effective coping mechanisms, play, and self-expression activities, ensuring that children and their families receive the guidance they need during difficult times.

Key Responsibilities

Develops, implements, and assesses both short-term and long-term objectives to address the psychosocial and developmental requirements of pediatric and neonatal patients. Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive education to patients and their families, formulating and executing tailored care plans. Engages with relevant departments to design and execute special events and activities that help normalize the hospital experience for patients and their families. Acts as an advocate for patients and families, adhering to the principles of family-centered care. Participates in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of in-service training programs. Works alongside Child Life Assistants and Volunteer Services to recruit and assess volunteers as necessary. Provides educational guidance and supervision to student interns within the Child Life Department. Assists in the onboarding and mentorship of new team members and Child Life interns.

Physical Demands

The position requires physical activities such as walking, standing, sitting, lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling. The ability to lift and support up to 51 pounds is necessary for handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree in Human Growth and Development, Education, Psychology, or a related field is required. Experience in a Child Life Program through student placement or internship in a healthcare environment is mandatory. Current Child Life Certification is essential. Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with effective organizational and time management abilities, are crucial for success in this role.
