Role Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician/Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in evaluating and measuring visual functions to aid ophthalmologists in diagnosing and managing ocular disorders. Responsibilities include preparing and maintaining examination rooms, managing inventory of medical supplies, and providing support to multiple physicians across various locations as necessary. This position also involves obtaining patient consents, scheduling follow-up visits, and performing scribing duties while assisting with clinical trials when required. Additionally, the role includes handling patient check-ins and check-outs, verifying insurance details, and managing co-pay collections.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct tests on patients' visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and tonometry, documenting results in the electronic medical record (EMR). Administer eye dilation and perform Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF).
- Gather and document patient medical histories, ensuring all examination results and relevant information are accurately recorded in the EMR.
- Prepare patients for examinations, assisting the physician with necessary procedures and equipment setup.
- Manage the opening and closing of examination rooms, ensuring cleanliness and proper sterilization of instruments. Restock supplies and conduct inventory checks as needed.
- Possess knowledge of common ophthalmic diagnoses, procedures, and tools. Secure consents for minor procedures and assist with payment programs.
- Facilitate authorization processes for treatments or injections prior to or during patient visits.
- Achieve BCVA certification to support clinical trials as directed.
Additional Duties: Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor, Director of Operations, or physician.
Accountability: Ensure patient satisfaction through professional and courteous service. Complete assigned competencies satisfactorily within the designated timeframe post-hire and annually thereafter.

Qualifications:
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively. Excellent communication skills are essential.
- Previous experience in a medical clinic setting is preferred but not mandatory.
Educational Requirements:
- A minimum of a high school diploma is required; a college degree or relevant continuing education is advantageous.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be capable of remaining stationary for a significant portion of the work shift, frequently moving throughout the office to assist patients and access supplies. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds is necessary. Effective communication with patients to relay important medical and financial information is required.
Travel Requirements:
- Occasional travel between various office locations may be necessary.
Equipment Utilization:
This position requires proficiency in using office equipment such as computers, copiers, faxes, and scanners, as well as medical instruments including examination chairs and diagnostic testing devices.
