Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse to join our Radiation Oncology team at ChristianaCare in Newark, DE. As a key member of our team, you will provide comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing radiation therapy, ensuring their safety and well-being throughout their treatment journey.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough patient assessments, identifying potential barriers to care and initiating referrals as needed.
  • Coordinate patient care with radiation oncology physicians, ensuring seamless transitions and optimal outcomes.
  • Manage a caseload of patients, providing education and support to address side effects and symptoms related to radiation/chemo-radiation treatments.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including research nurses, to coordinate care for patients requiring combined therapy.
  • Coordinate patient navigation through appointments, including Radiation Oncology, Hematology/Oncology, Imaging, Laboratory, GYN Oncology, and Multidisciplinary Clinics.
  • Develop and implement individualized plans of care, ensuring timely delivery of care and coordination with external departments.
  • Monitor and manage post-anesthesia pediatric patients undergoing radiation therapy, collaborating with professional staff from A I Dupont and other facilities.
  • Administer IV contrast and therapies, following established protocols and guidelines.
  • Provide patient education, identifying barriers to education and reiterating physician instructions and advice.
  • Coordinate complex radiotherapy cases, including total body irradiation, stereotactic radiation surgery, high dose rate brachytherapy, and low dose rate brachytherapy.
  • Participate in the development of assessment tools, nursing policies and procedures, patient education literature, treatment pathways, and algorithms for cancer patients within the department.
  • Lead or participate in department performance improvement committees, collaborating with other committee members to analyze clinical outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Coordinate and provide patient, family, staff, and community education through the use of expert clinical knowledge.
  • Act as patient advocate, ensuring resources are available to the patient and acting on behalf of the patient for continuity of care.
  • Initiate team meetings (huddles) with co-workers and other members of the healthcare team to review daily operations and outstanding issues concerning patient care.
  • Obtain insurance authorization for required tests, procedures, medications, etc.
  • Assist in the implementation of performance improvement programs for radiation oncology cancer patients.
  • Maintain collaborative professional working relationships with co-workers, Radiation Therapists, Radiation Oncologists, support, and administrative staff.
  • Maintain required credentials and assume responsibility for ongoing personal professional growth.
  • Exhibit a high level of professionalism, providing a role model for others in the department and in the organization.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of patient and staff information per hospital policy and regulations.
  • Attend meetings and in-service educational programs as required.
  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Perform assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.
Requirements
  • Current RN licensure in the state of DE. Additionally, may be required to obtain PA RN license.
  • Two years of nursing experience is required; nursing experience in oncology is preferred.
  • An advanced nursing degree or certification as an Oncology Nurse (OCN) by the Oncology Nursing Society is preferred.
  • BLS required and active at the time of hire.
