Patient Access Coordinator I

As a Patient Access Coordinator, you will play a vital role in supporting our esteemed healthcare team by delivering essential administrative assistance. This position serves as the initial point of contact for patients, embodying warmth, engagement, and professionalism. You will proactively address patient needs and ensure a welcoming atmosphere through effective communication and body language. In this prominent role, you will collaborate with departmental teams and engage with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct face-to-face or telephone interviews to register and instruct patients.
- Accurately enter and verify medical, demographic, insurance, financial, and business information to maintain the integrity of the master patient index and facilitate accurate claims processing.
- Prepare standard patient documentation such as forms, labels, brochures, and surveys.
- Safeguard confidential health records, manage physician orders, and coordinate patient scheduling.
- Identify the need for interpreter services and communicate this effectively.
- Educate patients on third-party coverage and associated liabilities.
- Discuss potential payment options and connect patients with financial counselors as necessary. Collect and balance co-pays, deductibles, and other payments.
- Maintain knowledge of legal and compliance requirements related to Patient Access Services, integrating these principles into daily workflows.
- Address a variety of patient inquiries regarding services and logistics to optimize access to care.
- Assist patients in utilizing My UH Care Personal Health Record.
- Ensure productivity and quality standards are met.
- Stay informed about computer systems, insurance regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and other staff to enhance patient experience and departmental efficiency.
- Participate in emergency preparedness initiatives.
- Maintain a tidy and organized workspace.
- Be open to cross-training for additional responsibilities as assigned.
- May be required to work at various locations.
- Perform other assigned tasks as needed.
- Adhere to all organizational policies and standards.
- Refer to departmental documentation for specific duties during orientation.
- Comply with all regulations to securely manage Protected Health Information (PHI) for patients, including annual training and adherence to the UH Code of Conduct.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED (Required)
- Associate's Degree or progress towards a degree (Preferred)
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology (Preferred)
- Minimum of 1 year in a call center, patient registration, scheduling, office, banking, customer service, or related medical field with computer usage (Required)
- Proficient in using PCs and navigating multiple applications, MS Office, and standard office equipment (Required)
- Strong keyboarding and data entry skills (Required)
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities (Required)
- Exceptional client service, communication, and relationship-building skills (Required)
- Able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment (Required)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong spelling (Required)
