Position Overview

As an Electricity Market Congestion Specialist II, you will be under the supervision of the Director of Congestion Trading, providing both quantitative and qualitative analysis for the electricity markets in the United States. Your primary focus will be on enhancing grid modeling and optimizing congestion portfolios. Daily responsibilities will include conducting cost assessments utilizing DAYZER to predict nodal electricity price components, as well as analyzing weather trends and fuel costs to forecast base electricity prices. You will also implement optimization models to anticipate congestion and identify its drivers, while researching data through relevant databases and statistical methodologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct congestion analysis for MISO/SPP Independent System Operator (ISO).
  • Serve as the primary resource within the organization for regional ISO insights, collaborating with various teams.
  • Execute production cost models (Dayzer) by methodically analyzing and updating inputs as necessary.
  • Design and carry out scenario studies relevant to the study period, systematically analyzing outcomes.
  • Establish a systematic and repeatable methodology to develop fundamental perspectives on congestion trading.
  • Examine and identify the factors influencing Day Ahead and Real Time congestion market results based on macroeconomic fundamentals (supply, demand, renewables) and microeconomic fundamentals (specific transmission and generation outages, bids, facility limitations).
  • Identify discrepancies in models by aligning model results with market outcomes and propose suitable solutions.
  • Support asset managers with on-demand fundamental analyses.
  • Engage in ISO meetings as necessary and evaluate commercial implications.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to enhance and maintain trading tools.
  • Develop and sustain dispatch and flow models, effectively communicating fundamental developments and insights to stakeholders.
  • Create models to monitor market fundamentals and regularly benchmark against actual data.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business, Finance, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in congestion market analysis, power plant economics, price forecasting, trading, or a related area.
  • Familiarity with Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and Southwest Power Pool (SPP) ISO congestion markets.
  • Experience in power market analysis, power plant economics, price forecasting, trading, or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of Financial Transmission Rights (FTRs) market, Day-Ahead & Real-Time markets.
  • Understanding of power flow shift factors, line-outage distribution factors, and contingency analysis concepts.
  • Strong analytical capabilities.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Willingness to engage in discussions and debates with colleagues.
  • Proficiency in Structured Query Language (SQL) and Python.
  • Familiarity with statistical techniques.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

Compensation Details

Salary Range: $74,500 - $114,195 USD annually. This range represents the average expected pay for a qualified candidate. Actual salary may vary based on various factors.

In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for a competitive bonus/incentive plan.
