Job Title: Assistant Dean for Privacy and Technology Law

Established in 1865, the George Washington University Law School is a prestigious institution in the nation's capital. We are seeking an experienced professional to serve as Assistant Dean for Privacy and Technology Law, overseeing the development and implementation of programs in this critical area.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and develop curricular offerings in privacy and technology law, ensuring alignment with faculty guidance, pedagogical principles, student interests, and employment trends.
  • Identify, recommend, and support adjunct faculty to meet curricular goals, reviewing course evaluations and addressing concerns.
  • Provide academic and career advising to students, offering timely and accessible information through group events, publications, and one-on-one sessions.
  • Administer the Recognition of a JD Concentration in Privacy, Data Security, and Technology Law, reviewing requirements and making adjustments as needed.
  • Establish new graduate-level programs in privacy and technology law, including an LLM and a Masters of Studies in Law.
  • Supervise students' independent legal writing projects, consult on journal notes and seminar papers, and assist with publication.
  • Identify and create new internship opportunities, collaborating with the Field Placement Office to support students.
  • Assist students in gaining full-time employment, collaborating with the Career Center and maintaining connections with placement supervisors and employers.
  • Potentially teach a course on Privacy and Technology Law each year.
Program Administration:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and administrator for the Privacy and Technology Law Program.
  • Establish a Privacy and Technology Law Advisory Council (PTAC) to provide guidance and financial support.
  • Work with alumni leaders and Alumni Relations Staff to organize, fund, and market events, cultivating relationships with alumni.
  • Coordinate alumni leaders as needed.
  • Organize and market Privacy and Technology Law events to elevate GW's academic reputation.
  • Administer the GW Center for Law and Technology (GWCLT) under the oversight of the Dean and the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
  • Coordinate management and execution of GWCLT.
  • Publicize the GWCLT program and the work of Privacy and Technology Law faculty and students.
  • Help build, maintain, and support new initiatives related to Privacy and Technology Law.
  • Work with the Law School Dean's office, Development Office, GWCLT faculty, and alumni to enhance fund-raising.
  • Create opportunities to promote and showcase the scholarly work and achievements of the GWCLT faculty and students.
  • Organize and support conferences, symposia, and other scholarly, professional, and public-facing projects and events.
  • Support the GWCLT-related student journals and law student associations.
Requirements:
  • Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 7 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • J.D. degree is strongly preferred.
  • Significant experience in legal education and/or law practice in privacy and technology law, as well as extensive knowledge and understanding of the various disciplines within the field and familiarity with the work of lawyers in those disciplines is desired.
  • A personal profile that includes significant demonstrated achievements and strong visibility in the academic, private, nonprofit, and/or government sectors in the field of privacy and technology law.
  • Familiarity with major federal and state regulatory agencies, other national/international governmental or non-profit agencies, and professional legal organizations involved in privacy and technology law preferred.
  • Demonstrated administrative and management experience and capabilities with previous experience in program administration, fundraising, public service, and/or public relations is desired.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to work and partner with members of the GWCLT faculty and others on joint programming efforts and the promotion of scholarship by faculty and students.
  • A well-developed privacy and technology law network.
  • Experience in developing/managing programs that involved fundraising/grant development is desired.
  • Experience with in-depth research projects and publications preferred.
  • The ability to work sensitively with a diverse multicultural population of students, partners, and faculty.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as in teams.
  • Ability to work creatively within broad program goals.
