Position Overview

New York University's Stern School of Business is seeking a talented Application Software Engineer to join the Volatility and Risk Institute (VRI). This role is integral to supporting various research projects within VRI and involves active participation in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software solutions. The engineer will be responsible for implementing upgrades and enhancements that will enhance VRI's financial modeling and analytical capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare detailed technical specifications and design documents.
  • Develop and test innovative technical solutions while ensuring high code quality standards.
  • Contribute to the architecture and development of the Volatility Laboratory (V-Lab) AWS infrastructure.
  • Document newly developed applications and provide necessary support.
  • Research and implement cutting-edge methods to enhance application quality and functionality.
  • Collaborate with team members to share insights and best practices.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical discipline, such as Computer Science, Information Systems, or Mathematics, along with a minimum of three years of relevant experience. This experience should include maintaining cloud infrastructure and developing robust, high-performance web applications. A solid understanding of distributed web-based application design, development, and troubleshooting is essential.

Proficiency in one or more programming languages, familiarity with relational database systems (e.g., MySQL, Oracle, Postgres), and knowledge of cloud technologies and Infrastructure-as-Code principles are required. A strong grasp of software development methodologies, algorithms, data structures, and design patterns, coupled with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, is also necessary.

Preferred qualifications include over two years of software engineering experience in the financial sector, proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, R, and shell scripting, and experience with version control systems like Git. Familiarity with AWS technologies (e.g., CloudFormation, EC2, ECR, ECS, Fargate, S3), infrastructure technologies (e.g., Chef, Terraform), and the Linux operating system is advantageous. Knowledge of financial concepts, econometrics, and statistics will be beneficial.
