General Summary: This is a nonexempt role responsible for a diverse range of tasks within a healthcare setting. The position encompasses both clinical and administrative responsibilities, including assisting healthcare providers with patient care and managing scheduling, clerical duties, environmental tasks, and organizational functions. The aim is to ensure patients receive comprehensive information to maximize their experience with clinical services.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Collect, confirm, and document patient vitals and medical history.
  2. Manage patient care duties as assigned, which may involve checking schedules and coordinating patient flow.
  3. Accompany patients to examination or procedure rooms, providing assistance as necessary.
  4. Conduct screenings in accordance with provider protocols.
  5. Support healthcare professionals during various procedures.
  6. Communicate instructions to patients and their families.
  7. Handle incoming calls and provide relevant information as directed.
  8. Record assessments, interventions, patient and family responses, medications administered or prescribed, and test results in medical records. Documentation is essential to confirm services rendered.
  9. Deliver basic patient care as required.
  10. Administer medications and treatments as instructed.
  11. Assist other healthcare professionals with examinations, diagnostic procedures, treatments, and minor medical interventions.
  12. Perform clerical tasks as assigned, including managing patient medical records, obtaining lab and X-ray reports, completing necessary forms, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance details, and maintaining accurate charts or electronic medical records.
  13. Adhere to infection control and safety protocols, as well as confidentiality regulations.
  14. Promote wellness by distributing patient education materials and communicating physician instructions.
  15. Fulfill environmental responsibilities, such as preparing instruments and equipment per departmental protocols, cleaning examination and procedure rooms, and managing supplies.
  16. Engage in organizational duties, including respecting patient rights, responding to emergency situations, and reporting issues to supervisors.
  17. Perform clinical medical assisting tasks as permitted by state regulations, which may include checking vital signs, preparing for physical examinations, administering medications, assisting in minor surgeries, and managing laboratory procedures.
  18. Become proficient in outpatient scheduling tasks.
  19. Complete other assigned duties as necessary.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent, medical assistant diploma from an accredited institution, or completion of a community college medical assisting program. Certification in a specific specialty may be required if working in a specialized department.

Experience: A minimum of three years of recent experience in a medical facility as a medical assistant is required.

Other Requirements: Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). CPR certification and up-to-date health records, including necessary immunizations, are mandatory for employment in healthcare.

Equipment Used: Standard medical examination and office equipment, including computerized health information management systems for medical records.

Work Environment: A combination of medical office and examination/procedure room settings, ensuring adequate lighting, ventilation, and space.

Mental/Physical Requirements: Must utilize proper body mechanics for patient transfers and assistance. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies may be required. Occasional stress may arise from managing multiple patient and staff interactions.
