Job Summary

As a Surgical First Assistant, you will play a vital role in the operating room, working closely with surgeons to ensure the highest level of patient care. This is a challenging and rewarding position that requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work well under pressure.

Responsibilities
  • Assist surgeons during a variety of surgical procedures, using surgical instruments and equipment as directed.
  • Provide exposure of the operative site through the use of retractors and other instruments, and through suctioning and sponging.
  • Suture tissue with the appropriate suture materials and suturing techniques.
  • Anticipate and plan individualized care based on advanced knowledge of the surgical procedure and anticipate unexpected patient and surgeon needs.
  • Prepare equipment, supply, and resource needs based on an individualized plan of care.
  • Implement a plan of care that incorporates physician-prescribed treatments, nursing assessments, and diagnostic data in a manner that is prioritized, timely, and integrated with the plan of care.
  • Utilize critical judgment to analyze patient assessment data to develop an appropriate plan of care.
  • Perform in a variety of surgical specialties as needed.
  • Demonstrate competence in delegation, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and team building.
  • Evaluate care given by team members and provide feedback.
  • Effectively supervise team members and maintain accountability for the standard of care provided.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree or clinical certification.
  • Three years' experience in a surgical setting.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (BLS HCP) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Certified First Assistant (CFA) or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) certification from the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) or the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
