Clinical Radiation Physicist

The Radiation Safety division, part of the Office of Research Protections, is in search of a skilled Health Physicist. This role is essential in supporting both medical health physics and diagnostic imaging physics operations across various departments including Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Gamma Knife, and the PET/Cyclotron Facility. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with medical professionals, faculty, and staff within the University and its affiliated medical centers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting audits to ensure adherence to NRC, PA-DEP, TJC, and ACR regulations and standards.
  • Formulating radiation safety policies and protocols.
  • Overseeing quality assurance and quality control programs for gamma cameras, PET scanners, mammography, and diagnostic x-ray equipment.
  • Delivering training on radiation safety.
  • Executing radiation shielding and dosimetry calculations.
  • Supporting a comprehensive radiopharmaceutical therapy initiative.

Applicants must possess current MQSA approval or demonstrate the ability to obtain it. Preference will be given to candidates with ABR certification in Diagnostic Imaging, although equivalent certifications such as those from the American Board of Health Physics, American Board of Medical Physics, or American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine will also be considered. The Radiation Safety department at the University of Pittsburgh is dedicated to ensuring the optimal and safe use of all licensed radioactive materials and ionizing radiation-producing equipment.

The Office of Research Protections (ORP) assists researchers in designing and conducting studies that comply with ethical standards and relevant laws and regulations. The ORP achieves this through education, prospective review of research protocols, consultations with researchers, and monitoring ongoing studies.

Position Overview

This role involves providing radiation physics support for radiation equipment, radioactive materials, and radiation research, which includes evaluations, inventories, and testing methodologies. The incumbent will be responsible for drafting instructions and documentation related to radiological safety operations, facilitating the disposal of radiation materials, and preparing hazardous materials for transport and disposal. Additionally, guidance will be provided to other environmental health and safety technicians.

Essential Skills:

Ability to perform complex measurements using advanced equipment. Proficiency in utilizing computer systems for intricate safety calculations and database management. Strong verbal, written, and electronic communication skills are essential.

Physical Requirements:

The candidate must be capable of moving around the campus efficiently and lifting weights of 25 to 30 pounds. A valid driver's license from Pennsylvania is required.
