Clinical Radiation Physicist

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a qualified Clinical Radiation Physicist to enhance our Radiation Safety program within the Office of Research Protections. This role is integral in supporting medical health physics and diagnostic imaging physics activities across various departments including Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Radiation Oncology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting audits to ensure adherence to NRC, PA-DEP, TJC, and ACR regulations.
  • Formulating and implementing radiation safety policies and procedures.
  • Overseeing quality assurance and quality control programs for gamma cameras, PET scanners, and diagnostic x-ray equipment.
  • Delivering comprehensive radiation safety training to staff.
  • Executing radiation shielding and dosimetry calculations.
  • Supporting a robust radiopharmaceutical therapy program.

Qualifications: Candidates must possess current MQSA approval or the ability to obtain it. Preference will be given to those with ABR certification in Diagnostic Imaging, although equivalent certifications such as those from the American Board of Health Physics or the American Board of Medical Physics will also be considered. Board-eligible candidates are welcome to apply.

The Radiation Safety team at the University of Pittsburgh is dedicated to the optimal and safe use of licensed radioactive materials and ionizing radiation-producing equipment.

The Office of Research Protections (ORP) plays a crucial role in assisting researchers to design and conduct studies that comply with ethical standards and legal regulations. This is achieved through education, prospective review of research protocols, and ongoing monitoring of studies.

Position Overview

This position provides essential radiation physics support related to radiation equipment, radioactive materials, and radiation research, including evaluations, inventories, and testing methodologies. Responsibilities also include writing operational documentation for radiological safety and facilitating the disposal of radioactive materials and hazardous chemicals.

Essential Skills: Proficiency in performing complex measurements with advanced equipment and utilizing computer systems for safety calculations and database management. Strong verbal, written, and electronic communication skills are essential.

Physical Requirements: Candidates must be able to navigate the campus efficiently and lift weights ranging from 25 to 30 pounds. A valid Pennsylvania driver's license is required.
