We are seeking a Manuscript Editor to refine and prepare content for publication in The New England Journal of Medicine, engage with authors on revisions, and perform various editorial responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Revise manuscripts for coherence, clarity, style, internal consistency, grammar, and usage, making necessary adjustments.
- Format figures and tables, restructuring as needed, and verify mathematical computations. Collaborate closely with medical illustrators to create precise and clear visuals.
- Edit online-exclusive content in accordance with established style guidelines.
- Engage in discussions with authors regarding revisions, prompting new material to enhance and clarify the original manuscript, explaining journal policies and appropriate usage, and evaluating proposed changes while suggesting alternatives as required.
- Review and correct proofs for clarity, style, consistency, and grammatical accuracy.
- Consult with deputy editors or the executive editor for clarification on complex or ambiguous technical content.
- Conduct technical research as needed, utilizing both print and digital resources.
- Participate in departmental meetings and undertake additional related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is essential, alongside strong language proficiency, specialized knowledge of grammar and word usage, understanding of publishing processes, and familiarity with medical and scientific terminology, foreign languages, and mathematics.
- Several years of experience as a full-time manuscript editor is required, along with proficiency in electronic editing using Microsoft Word and tracked changes.
- Experience in medical or scientific editing and a proven editing capability are highly desirable.
- Experience in author interactions via telephone and email is also highly desirable.
- Ability to maintain composure and efficiency under tight deadlines, balancing precision and meticulous attention to detail with the demands of a regular publication schedule.
- Must possess confidence, maturity, and tact to effectively engage with authors and editors.
