Bloomfield, New Jersey, United States Uncommon Schools Full time

About Uncommon Schools: Uncommon Schools is a non-profit organization operating a network of 54 exceptional public charter schools serving grades K-12 across multiple states.

Our Mission: We are dedicated to establishing and managing outstanding urban public charter schools that effectively bridge the achievement gap and equip students from low-income backgrounds for success in higher education and beyond.

Our Impact: Our commitment to this mission is evident in our college graduation rates, which surpass the national average, and in the numerous success stories of our students and alumni.

Program Overview: The Uncommon Schools-Relay GSE Teaching Fellowship presents a distinctive opportunity for aspiring educators to gain high-quality training while progressively assuming teaching responsibilities.

This two-year fellowship, a collaboration between Relay Graduate School of Education (Relay GSE) and selected partner schools, is tailored for recent graduates and individuals transitioning into teaching who seek an innovative pathway into the profession.

Year One: During the initial year, participants will be employed full-time as Fellows, contributing to student achievement and supporting school-level systems.

Fellows will engage in weekly Deliberate Practice sessions led by Relay GSE's expert faculty, alongside additional training in effective teaching methodologies.

As the year progresses, Fellows will gradually take on increased teaching responsibilities, enhancing their skills and confidence.

Year Two: Following the first year, Fellows will be well-prepared to transition into full-time teaching roles at Uncommon Schools.

Ongoing coaching and support will continue as they serve as the primary instructor.

Throughout the two-year fellowship, participants will also be enrolled as graduate students at Relay GSE, undertaking Masters-level coursework that complements their teaching roles.

Curriculum Focus: Relay GSE's curriculum is specifically designed to empower new educators to establish high behavioral and academic expectations while developing rigorous, data-informed lessons with a strong emphasis on student care.

Completing the Relay GSE Teaching Fellowship will culminate in a comprehensive understanding of effective classroom teaching.

Benefits for Fellows:

  • Master of Arts in Teaching from Relay GSE, emphasizing practice-based teaching methods and robust support for new educators;
  • New York teaching certification;
  • Full-time salary and benefits for the duration of the program, with a clear pathway to employment post-graduation;
  • Extensive weekly training and deliberate practice sessions focused on proven teaching techniques;
  • A residency experience that allows engagement with expert educators and best practices, paving the way to a teaching career;
  • Access to a network of experienced Uncommon Schools and Relay GSE educators, along with fellow new teachers and professionals;
  • Opportunity to serve as a Professional Corps AmeriCorps member, which includes benefits such as a financial education award, student loan deferment, and childcare support.

Fellow Responsibilities:

  • Complete Relay GSE coursework and participate in graduate-level classes;

Ideal Candidates:

  • Individuals committed to teaching in New York state schools for a minimum of three years following the first year of the fellowship;
  • Recent college graduates or career-changers of any age, background, or experience who are passionate about becoming effective educators;
  • Goal-oriented and driven individuals eager to make a positive impact on K-12 students and their communities;
  • Individuals possessing the resilience, optimism, and determination to overcome challenges;
  • Team players eager to collaborate with school faculty and graduate school colleagues.

Compensation and Support: Fellows are salaried staff members while completing the Relay program. For those who continue at their school for additional years, stipends will be provided to cover out-of-pocket costs associated with their participation in Relay, effectively financing their Master's degree within four years.

Diversity and Inclusion: Uncommon Schools values diversity, equity, and inclusion, striving to build a team that reflects the varied backgrounds and experiences of our students. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment that encourages meaningful discussions about race and identity.

As an equal opportunity employer, Uncommon Schools prohibits discrimination and harassment of any kind and ensures that individuals with disabilities receive all employment privileges and reasonable accommodations necessary for their roles.
