Candidates holding this license may receive an additional 5.5% compensation above the standard rate for the Aviation Maintenance Technician classification.

In-Flight Bonus for Aviation Maintenance Technicians: Permanent, full-time employees in this classification who are assigned to perform "in-flight" maintenance checks will receive a 5.5% bonus.


DEFINITION:
Responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing airframes, engines, and other components of aircraft operated by the County.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:


Positions in this classification receive technical and administrative supervision from a Supervising Aviation Maintenance Technician or a Chief, Aviation Maintenance.

Technical guidance may be provided by Senior Aviation Maintenance Technicians.

Incumbents perform journey-level technical maintenance, repairs, and modifications on reciprocating and/or turbine-powered aircraft in the Sheriff's or Fire Department's air operations.

Incumbents must demonstrate proficiency in identifying and diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, structural, and other issues; maintaining and repairing engines, airframes, and accessory equipment; and understanding the operational and preventive maintenance requirements of the aircraft.

Aviation Maintenance Technicians undergo a one-year probationary period, receiving structured, in-service training in the repair and maintenance of complex, single-engine or multi-engine, turbine-powered aircraft.

Successful completion of departmental training programs is required to complete the probationary period.

This role frequently involves lifting over 50 pounds and climbing on aircraft and ladders while carrying tools and equipment.

Gathers and interprets information from various sources (e.g., pilots, manufacturers' maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, test results, etc.) through effective communication, inquiry, reading, testing, and performing in-flight duties to troubleshoot, guide inspections, and execute maintenance repairs.

Maintains AirBus AS350 / AS332 helicopters by:
conducting daily, periodic, hourly, and other inspections as mandated by manufacturers, Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), and/or County policy to assess airworthiness and identify potential issues;

troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and structural problems using visual inspection techniques and diagnostic equipment (e.g., volt-ohm meter, pressure gauges, etc.) to determine the source of issues and necessary corrective actions (e.g., adjustments, repairs, parts replacement, etc.)

;
repairing, removing, and replacing defective components, overhauling parts, and fabricating new parts using various tools and equipment (e.g., pullers, wrenches, etc.) to ensure aircraft or components are airworthy and ready for service;
cleaning using appropriate materials and techniques to facilitate visual inspections, prevent corrosion, and maintain a professional appearance of the aircraft.

Completes forms and logbook entries (e.g., inspection checklists, maintenance logs, etc.) by hand and/or using computer applications to document maintenance activities, report issues, and ensure compliance with manufacturers' guidance, FARs, and/or County policy.


SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
Three years of full-time experience within the last five years in the repair and maintenance of turbine-powered helicopters, including:
One year of experience must involve the repair and maintenance of Airbus turbine-powered helicopters.

One year of the required experience must include being in responsible charge of repairs and overhauls to return helicopters to flight status in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration Regulations and manufacturer requirements.


LICENSE:
A valid Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic's License issued by the Federal Aviation Administration.

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize alternative transportation methods to perform job-related essential functions.


PHYSICAL CLASS:

Physical Class IV – Arduous:

This classification involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working at heights on irregular surfaces.

It includes positions that may require extraordinary physical activity.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
*To qualify, applicants must submit a copy of their valid Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic's License with their application at the time of filing, or within 7 calendar days from the date of application filing. Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire.

The questionnaire includes a pre-investigative section that will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the relevant department.

Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and must wait twelve months from the date of disqualification to reapply.


EXAMINATION CONTENT

This examination will consist of two parts:

PART I
A multiple-choice and/or simulation assessment(s) evaluating: achievement, teamwork, responsibility, safety orientation, thoroughness, and mechanical comprehension weighted 30%.
ONLY CANDIDATES WHO ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON
PART I WILL PROCEED TO
PART II.

PART II

A performance test assessing:

knowledge of procedures used to inspect the Airbus AS350 B2; knowledge of procedures used to maintain and repair Airbus AS350 B2 engines, airframes, accessory equipment, etc.; knowledge of safety principles; knowledge of various hand and pneumatic tools and equipment; and mechanical comprehension weighted 70%.

ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON
PART II TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their responses automatically transferred to this examination.

This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test responses may be transferred.


VETERANS CREDIT
If you served in the military and were honorably discharged, you may qualify for Veteran's Credit.
