Critical Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

We're seeking a highly skilled Critical Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our team in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) at Duke University Hospital.
About the RoleThe CTICU Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care services for complex critically ill cardiothoracic surgery and Advanced Heart Failure patients. This role involves working collaboratively with cardiac anesthesiology, cardiothoracic surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality patient care.
Responsibilities- Provide clinical care for cardiothoracic surgery patients in the CTICU, following established protocols and under the supervision of cardiothoracic surgeons or back-up supervising physicians.
- Round daily on patients to assess, diagnose, plan treatment, set priorities, and evaluate the effectiveness and cost efficiency of cardiothoracic patient care.
- Perform procedures such as intubation, extubation, airway management, and chest tube insertion, as well as manage mechanical circulatory support devices.
- Collaborate with the chief resident, residents, and fellows to formulate treatment plans and monitor patient progress.
- Assess patients for change in status and institute appropriate interventions, including emergency interventions to stabilize patients until physician support arrives.
- NP: Graduate of an accredited MSN or DNP Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program for adult care.
- PA: Graduate of an accredited Masters or Doctorate Degree Physician Assistant Program.
- Unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as a NP.
- Unrestricted medical license issued by the NCMB with authorization to practice as a PA.
- Federal and State DEA prescriptive authority.
- ACNP or AGACNP certification for NPs, and PA-C certification for PAs.
- 1 year of experience in high acuity adult CTICU/ICU, or a one-year Critical Care Fellowship for PAs.
- Able to clearly articulate scope of practice and practice within those guidelines as an NP/PA in the state of North Carolina and within the Duke University Health System.
- Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems.
- Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
- Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.
The primary work environment will be the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at Duke University Hospital, with rotational shifts and 7 days per week, including holidays.
