Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The role involves delivering civil-structural engineering expertise and support to the Transmission Substation engineering and design teams. The primary objective is to ensure the provision of safe, economical, and high-quality engineering and design services. This position entails offering civil-structural specific design and guidance on intricate engineering and technical challenges associated with various projects. Responsibilities include both client-facing project work and project management assistance. The individual in this role is expected to contribute to discipline-specific tasks, execute responsible charge engineering duties, and oversee project timelines and budgets. Additionally, the incumbent will assist in proposal creation, project cost estimation, and business development initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under minimal supervision in the domain of power delivery and structural engineering, the incumbent will:

• Cultivate expertise in identifying, analyzing, and resolving engineering, technical, and design challenges.

• Efficiently plan, organize, estimate, schedule, and monitor work activities.

• Produce thorough, timely, and precise technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches.

• Engage in continuous improvement of job-related engineering, technical, and professional knowledge, skills, and processes.

• Exhibit effective oral and written communication capabilities.

• Comprehend and generate substation civil-structural drawing packages (foundations, structural steel, bus, and cable) adhering to national codes, industry standards, and best practices.

• Advocate for the company's objectives and represent the organization positively and professionally.

• Collaborate with internal engineers and technical personnel on a daily basis.

• Establish and maintain professional relationships with clients.

• Monitor deliverables and schedules, presenting solutions to clients as necessary.

• Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

WORK COMPLEXITY:

Complex tasks; established procedures may not be available. Significant decision-making is required.

EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Influences decisions of moderate significance requiring a high degree of tact.

SUPERVISORY ROLE:

No direct reports.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.

Required: Engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution.

EXPERIENCE:

0-2 years of experience as a Civil/Structural Engineer within the electrical industry, specifically in power delivery.

CERTIFICATIONS:

Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is strongly preferred. Actively pursuing a Professional Engineering (PE) license with the ability to obtain licensure within two years.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

A. Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals and operational procedures.

B. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

C. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group settings to clients and colleagues.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

A. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

B. Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY:

A. Ability to interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and manage several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Understanding of practical research for engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting findings.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact with diverse individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with advanced electrical engineering concepts as they relate to civil-structural designs.
DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them in engineering drawings.
  • Capability to read, understand, and create civil engineering drawing packages related to substation layouts, specifically for foundation and structure designs.
  • Develop civil-structural project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projects.
  • Conduct calculations for various foundation types including drilled piers, spread footers, and transformer pads.
  • Design and procure transformer oil containment systems.
  • Analyze new and existing steel (or wood) structures using modeling software.
  • Oversee the work of junior staff and mentor designers/drafters.
  • Collaborate with senior civil engineers to establish best practices, quality assurance, and procedural guidelines.
  • Effectively communicate and liaise with other design disciplines, colleagues, contractors, consultants, suppliers, and clients.
  • Conduct site visits, provide advice on civil and structural engineering issues, and modify designs to address construction challenges.
  • Provide general project management capabilities to coordinate staff, assign tasks, and ensure project efficiency.
  • Assist the Project Manager in preparing and reviewing proposals and contracts for civil-structural scopes.
  • Support design requirements for permitting activities.
  • Manage budgets and project timelines.
  • Employ creative and logical thinking to resolve design and construction challenges.
  • Experience in a field or construction environment implementing or verifying engineering drawings.
  • Experience in the electric utility sector.
