Position Overview
The Solid Waste Services Division of Edmond Public Works is responsible for providing waste collection and disposal services to both residential and commercial entities within Edmond. This includes weekly waste collection, curbside recycling, monthly bulk item collection, and disposal of city-coded bags.
The Refuse Collection Vehicle Operator will engage in skilled operations by driving heavy-duty refuse collection trucks. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining a heavy-duty refuse collection vehicle equipped with hydraulic systems for packing and dumping; transporting waste loads to designated disposal sites; and maintaining, repairing, and delivering refuse containers, which may require some assembly and sub-assembly tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy-duty refuse collection vehicles.
- Empty residential carts or commercial containers into the truck.
- Transport waste to designated disposal sites, including servicing roll-off containers.
- Provide notifications to customers and report violations to the supervisor.
- Interpret route sheets to identify street addresses and required services.
- Leave notices and instructions for homeowners regarding special services.
- Perform minor maintenance on equipment, such as checking tire pressure, cleaning the cab, and washing the vehicle's exterior.
- Report maintenance needs to the supervisor or garage personnel.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent (preferred).
- Two years of relevant experience in solid waste management (preferred).
- Valid Class "B" Oklahoma Commercial Driver's License with necessary endorsements (preferred).
- The City of Edmond offers financial assistance for obtaining a CDL License for those without one.
- Driving record acceptable to the City's insurance provider.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interpreting instructions and responding to customer inquiries.
- Basic mathematical skills.
- Ability to operate required machinery.
- Capacity to learn the proper operation of front load, roll-off, and fork truck containers.
- Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds occasionally, and perform tasks such as stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
