Job Description

**Job Title:** Permit Technician I

**Job Summary:** The City of Roanoke is seeking a highly skilled Permit Technician I to join our team. As a Permit Technician I, you will be responsible for providing support and technical assistance in a customer service environment, creating a one-stop service for citizens, contractors, developers, and departments in the review of basic building, zoning, and development applications and processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide general information regarding applicable governmental regulations and requirements for routine building, zoning, and development permits to walk-in and telephone customers.
  • Process applications and requests for building, zoning, and development permits, inspections, and certificates/verifications.
  • Assess fees for permits and inspections and issue payment vouchers.
  • Issue approval of selected zoning and development permit applications.
  • Accept and forward complaints/requests regarding building, zoning, and development code enforcement for investigation.
  • Coordinate routine applications and projects with internal and external providers of utilities, insurance, and licenses.
  • Maintain relevant files, maps, and databases for reference and inspection purposes.
  • Prepare reports as needed.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three years related experience and/or training in building and/or development; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a team work environment helpful.

  • Dental insurance: Four coverage types are available: Family, Employee and Spouse, Employee and Child, and Employee only.
  • Life insurance: Paid by the City at no cost to employees.
  • Optional life insurance: Paid by the employee.
  • Long-term disability insurance: Designed to provide a monthly benefit to assist employees with bills and maintaining a standard of living when disabled as a result of a covered sickness or injury.
  • Retirement: Employees contribute 5% of salary and choose between participating in a traditional defined benefit plan or a hybrid program.
  • Deferred compensation: Employees may voluntarily contribute salary deferred dollars into a City-sponsored 457 plan.
  • Flexible spending account: Allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars from their paychecks to pay for child care and/or medical and dental expenses not covered by the City's health care or dental plans.
  • Virginia college savings plan: Two plans to choose from at a reduced application fee.
  • Employee health services: The City employee health services provides medical care for employees, retirees, and eligible spouses.
  • Employee assistance program (EAP): Support services available to assist employees facing life challenges.
  • Pay days: Direct deposit is required for all new employees. Paid bi-weekly, 26 pay periods per year.
