Medical Laboratory Technician Job Description

Rapid City Medical Center, LLP is seeking a skilled Medical Laboratory Technician to join our team in our busy medical laboratory. As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for performing technical laboratory functions, including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and immunology. You will report test results following clinic protocols, ensure quality control in collecting specimens, maintain equipment, and comply with all policies and OSHA regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform full range of simple-to-complex sample testing and laboratory services.
  • Provide specialized expertise and testing in microbiology, urinalysis, serology, hematology, immunohematology, hemostasis, and chemistry while practicing infectious disease safety.
  • Ensure sample integrity.
  • Evaluate, judge, and interpret test results and ensure accuracy.
  • Accept and process samples for on-site testing or forward to contracted reference laboratories.
  • Identify and resolve inconsistencies in patient results.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Ensure quality control and functionality of instruments.
  • Complete quality assurance monitor in hematology, chemistry, and hemostasis.
  • Prepare lab for inspection from regulatory institutions.
  • Provide customer service for questions directed at the laboratory.
  • Answer questions from patient providers regarding test processes, patient results, or sample collection techniques.
  • Train new employees and phlebotomy students.
  • Participate in continuing education programs.
  • Perform phlebotomy on patients when needed.
  • Monitor, maintain, order, and stock laboratory supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Requirements:
  • An Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, or related field and (1) year of clinical laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess certification as Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician by ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology).
  • Must be able to walk to various settings and to bend and reach and to stand or walk for varied periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies and equipment and help with patient transport and transfer.
Work Environment:

The Medical Laboratory Technician will work in a fast-paced medical laboratory environment, moving among many outpatient and inpatient settings. The position requires exposure to communicable diseases, sharp instruments, bodily fluids, and cleaning chemicals.
