Nourishing Hope delivers nutritious food through a choice-based distribution model and offers essential social services, including:
  • Monthly food distributions and weekly produce pickups through various food access initiatives.
  • Home delivery services for older adults, homebound individuals, and those with disabilities.
  • Social services that encompass case management, mental health counseling, job search assistance, domestic violence intervention, and referrals for public benefits (SNAP, healthcare, government forms) for anyone in need.
Each year, Nourishing Hope serves tens of thousands of individuals, providing over 4 million meals through our programs, alongside collaborations with other community organizations. Our commitment extends to offering case management and social services to more than 7,000 low-income individuals annually.

Position Summary:
The Professional Commercial Vehicle Operator is tasked with the operation of a 26-foot commercial box truck for the collection and delivery of food donations for Nourishing Hope, ensuring exceptional customer service to donors and partners. This role involves navigating between various Nourishing Hope sites and partner locations for food drop-offs and pickups.

This is a full-time temporary position for a duration of up to 60 days, with the potential for regular full-time employment based on performance and organizational requirements. The work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Safely operate a commercial box truck for efficient and timely pickups and deliveries across the Chicagoland area.
  • Adhere to all local, state, and federal vehicle operation regulations.
  • Load and unload food pallets, which may weigh up to 3,000 pounds, utilizing electric pallet jacks.
  • Handle in-kind donations, regularly lifting items up to 50 pounds using manual carts and dollies.
  • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of assigned vehicles, completing pre-trip and post-trip maintenance and safety checklists.
  • Conduct basic truck maintenance and report any routine maintenance issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of all pickup and delivery transactions and enter them into our database.
  • Safely operate forklifts, pallet stackers, and pallet jacks to manage food pallets within warehouses and vehicles.
  • Assist the warehouse team in the mornings before transport and after route completion, if routes conclude early.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent work experience.
  • Proven driving experience and certification required:
    • 2-3 years of Class B vehicle driving experience in major city environments, preferably in the Chicagoland area.
    • Valid State of Illinois Commercial Driver's License-Class B (Class A preferred).
    • Valid DOT card.
  • Clean driving record for the past three years.
  • Willingness to learn to operate material handling equipment.
  • Basic understanding of truck maintenance and upkeep.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective coordination with donors, staff, and partner agencies.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain food service sanitation certification.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally while transporting food between equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to maneuver pallets of food weighing up to 3,000 pounds with an electric pallet jack.
  • Willingness to undergo periodic substance/drug screening as required by IL DOT.
  • Ability to climb and navigate between equipment and vehicles with ease.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Understanding and belief in the significance of food security for all individuals.
