Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Mechanic Assistant to join our team at Del Valle Independent School District. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for assisting mechanics in the repair and maintenance of all vehicles, ensuring they are safely maintained and in good working condition.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist mechanics in performing routine maintenance tasks, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks.
  • Disassemble and reassemble simple components, and clean parts for reassembly.
  • Request and obtain necessary parts and tools for mechanics as needed.
  • Check and maintain accurate records of preventive and routine maintenance.
  • Inspect, repair, and replace tires, and perform other vehicle maintenance tasks as assigned.
  • Clean and maintain the shop area, including floors, stalls, and equipment.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, and other physical demands.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid Texas driver's license (B-CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsement required.
  • Bus Driver Certification from TEA required.
  • Must have a safe driving record verified by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in minor vehicle repair and maintenance required.
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with moderate to heavy physical demands, including lifting, climbing, and standing for long periods. The successful candidate must be able to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, and be available to respond to after-hour emergency calls as needed.

Qualifications
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and perform repairs with supervision.
  • Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts.
  • Ability to operate a bus.

The successful candidate will have access to a variety of equipment and tools, including:

  • Automotive diagnostic equipment.
  • Wheel balancing equipment.
  • Tire repair equipment.
  • Small hand tools.
  • Drills and drill press.
  • Grinder.
  • Air-powered tools.
  • Welding torch.
  • Torque wrench.
  • Jacks and lift equipment.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
