Overview:

As a Pharmacy Intern at Baystate Health, you will work under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist, engaging in various tasks within the pharmacy department. This role is essential for supporting the operational functions of the pharmacy, and you will be expected to adapt to changes in workflows as directed by leadership.

The intern is responsible for:
Gaining comprehensive knowledge of Baystate Medical Center's Pharmacy Services, including its values, policies, and procedures.

Understanding key responsibilities and performance metrics, which encompass: Medication Distribution; Commitment to Quality Improvement; Customer Interaction & Collaboration; and Attendance.

Upholding a strong dedication to patient-centered care delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

1) Exhibit a solid understanding of the assigned duties and execute various tasks associated with the institutional medication distribution system, adhering to regulatory standards.
2) Precisely compounding, pre-packaging, and re-packaging medications, ensuring accurate labeling for bulk dosage forms in accordance with departmental guidelines.
3) Conducting aseptic compounding of sterile preparations, including chemotherapy and specialty solutions, while following strict aseptic techniques and documentation protocols.
4) Maintaining a thorough understanding of the chemical and physical properties of medications, identifying those that require special handling or storage conditions.
5) Operating automated systems (e.g., Pyxis, compounders) in compliance with established policies and procedures.
6) Assisting with drug procurement and inventory management as necessary.
7) Commitment to Quality Improvement:
Accurately managing medication carts and participating in training for new pharmacy staff.
8) Customer Interaction & Collaboration:
Engaging effectively with healthcare team members, ensuring patient rights and confidentiality are respected.
9) Attendance:
Adhering to the attendance policies of Baystate Health.
10) Schedule:
The role requires a commitment to work every third weekend and participate in holiday rotations.

Required Experience:

1) None required.

Preferred Experience:

1) Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician is advantageous.

Skills and Competencies:

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential.
Proficiency in computer applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is preferred.
Ability to work independently and demonstrate strong mathematical skills.
