Overview:

Pharmacy interns, under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist, contribute to various functions within the pharmacy department. Under the leadership of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and Pharmacy Manager of Clinical Quality and Education, the pharmacy intern is tasked with essential duties and responsibilities as outlined herein, acknowledging that all employees are expected to perform additional similar and related tasks as assigned. Management reserves the right to modify or expand job responsibilities based on workflow or process changes as needed.

The intern is expected to:
Acquire and maintain comprehensive knowledge of Baystate Medical Center/Baystate Health (BH) Pharmacy Services. This knowledge encompasses the values, policies, and procedures of BMC/BH and BH Pharmacy Services.

Understand key job responsibilities and performance indicators that aid in fulfilling these responsibilities, which include: Medication Distribution; Commitment to Quality Improvement Initiatives; Customer Service & Collaboration; Attendance

Exhibit commitment and dedication to patient-centered care delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

1) Demonstrates a solid understanding of the duties and responsibilities associated with the assigned position and executes various functions related to the institutional medication distribution system in compliance with regulatory and compliance standards outlined in functions 2-6.

2) Precisely compounds, pre-packages, and re-packages medications, including labeling for bulk solid/liquid dosage forms in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Accurately prepares and distributes controlled substances following departmental guidelines.

3) Executes aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms. This includes practicing aseptic techniques, adhering to proper procedures for preparing all types of parenteral admixtures (including chemotherapy or other specialty solutions), preparing labels and control records, visually inspecting parenteral solutions, and documenting quality control. The intern must also be capable of performing calculations necessary for dosage determinations and solutions preparation using weight and volume equivalents in both metric and apothecary systems.

4) Maintains a thorough understanding of the general chemical and physical properties of medications handled in the pharmacy department. This includes identifying medications that are light-sensitive, require refrigeration, are caustic, or poisonous. The intern should also be able to utilize reference materials to locate stability information or material safety data sheets.

5) Operates automated technology (Pyxis, compounders, computers, etc.) in accordance with policies, procedures, and manufacturing instructions. Effectively utilizes automated dispensing machines to facilitate medication dispensing in compliance with BH policies and procedures.

6) Performs essential functions related to medication purchasing and inventory management as required.

7) Commitment to Quality Improvement Initiatives:
Accurately refills, checks, locks, and labels code carts according to policy/procedure. Functions in accordance with operational procedures specific to various satellites and shifts and is familiar with different specialty areas and procedures (Chemotherapy, ORs, IDS, BOSC, NICU, etc.; Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy staff. Engages in the BH staff development program - Performance Evaluation (PE) and works towards achieving departmental, professional, and personal objectives. Maintains a solid understanding of medication error prevention strategies and handling/preparation techniques for high-risk or high-alert medications, including LASA medications. Understands population-specific preparation procedures (geriatric, adult, pediatric, and neonatal dosage forms and products).

8) Customer Service & Collaboration:
Interacts effectively with other department members and the healthcare team regularly. Maintains attentiveness to patient rights. Upholds confidentiality of patient information. Prioritizes orders, processes requests, and informs the pharmacist as necessary. Receives and directs incoming calls for the department, managing the pharmacy window.

9) Attendance:
The intern is aware of and adheres to BH attendance policies.

10) Schedule:
The pharmacy intern role necessitates a commitment to work every third weekend (both day and evening shifts may be required) along with a holiday rotation (both day and evening shifts may be required).

Preferred Work Experience:

1) Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician is preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

Possesses strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Understands the principles of staff engagement.

Proficient in computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) preferred.

Ability to work independently.

Demonstrated mathematical skills.
