Job Title: Development Manager: Grants and Institutional Giving

We are seeking a highly skilled Development Manager to join our team at J. Murphy & Associates. As a key member of our development team, you will be responsible for managing a portfolio of clients, working closely with development coordinators, project managers, and grant writers to develop grant calendars, grants, and reports.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage a portfolio of clients, ensuring timely and effective grant development and reporting.
  • Collaborate with development coordinators, project managers, and grant writers to develop grant calendars, grants, and reports.
  • Work with the CEO on Capital Campaigns and community engagement strategies.
  • Identify operational and marketing strategies to move into new markets.
  • Plan and strategize with clients and JMA managers to achieve revenue goals.
  • Identify likely funding sources for clients and contact foundation or government program representatives as needed.
  • Assign grant research and writing tasks to grant writers based on conversations and prior approval.
  • Initiate work with clients to provide reporting, calendaring, and other evaluation/compliance-related tasks.
  • Ensure grants reports are completed on deadline.
  • Attend internal and external meetings, events, and other related activities.
  • Develop relationships with clients' staff through email, calls, and outreach meetings.
  • Manage client budgets and provide outreach when opportunities exceed spend.
Key Responsibilities: Writing/Editing/Research/Funder Outreach
  • Provide exceptional client experience.
  • Work with clients on researching and assigning grants.
  • Collaborate with grant writers and clients for input and edits on grants.
  • Create and review budgets, making recommendations for grant alignment with funders' priorities.
  • Assign grant research and writing tasks.
  • Compile, write, and edit LOIs, grant applications, letters, and queries, demonstrating strong expository writing skills and a high-level command of grammar and spelling.
  • Develop individual grant proposals in accordance with each grant-making organization's preferences and guidelines.
  • Work with clients on strategy and program planning to prepare for grant writing.
  • Develop and exhibit understanding of grant funders and their priorities.
  • Ensure JMA staff maintains contact with funders and calls them as required to pitch programs and other support.
  • Manage the process of providing progress reports and evaluation as required.
Key Responsibilities: Internal
  • Demonstrate leadership characteristics and values.
  • Demonstrate project management skills.
  • Cross-sell JMA services to grant clients.
  • Regularly review B4T reports for time, activities, and budget.
  • Serve as first-line backup for all grants when staff are out of office.
  • Review, edit, and sign off on all grant assignment sheets for all clients.
  • Serve as second signer for grants submission.
  • Mentor and train staff on grant writing and process.
  • Save documentation for grant, compliance, and JMA-related tasks.
  • Be available to staff for input and review throughout the grant process.
  • Direct prospect research and calendar development for all clients.
  • Work with staff to write approach documents and provide time estimates for grants assigned.
Experience/Qualifications
  • 5 or more years of experience working with nonprofit organizations, with grant writing and fundraising experience preferred.
  • Experience in public sector writing and RFPs, forms submission.
  • Defined specialties in grant writing, such as youth development, education, mental health, or nutrition.
  • Background in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or similar degree desired.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven organizational skills, including data management, prioritization, meeting deadlines, and teamwork.
  • Excellent computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statewide funders (corporate, foundations, civic).
  • Provide expertise and contacts.
