Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Vineyard Operations Manager to join our team at the Southwest Wine Center. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of our 13-acre estate vineyard, including pruning, suckering, positioning, tucking, tying, hedging, leafing, fruit thinning, and harvesting. They will also monitor vine health, phenological stages, and pest/disease pressure, applying appropriate pesticide and amendment programs as necessary. Additionally, they will maintain and repair vineyard infrastructure, ensure all vineyard activities adhere to safety standards, and train students and staff in safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Vineyard Operations Management:
- Oversee and manage all vineyard tasks, ensuring timely completion and maintaining high standards of quality.
- Monitor vine health, phenological stages, and pest/disease pressure, taking proactive measures to prevent damage and optimize yields.
- Maintain and repair vineyard infrastructure, including irrigation systems, trellises, end posts, and equipment, to ensure optimal functioning and longevity.
- Ensure all vineyard activities adhere to safety standards, providing training and guidance to students and staff as needed.
- Work Planning & Scheduling:
- Develop and communicate weekly work plans for students and employees, ensuring effective use of resources and meeting deadlines.
- Create and maintain work schedules for part-time employees, coordinating with the Director as needed to ensure seamless operation.
- Manage and lead vineyard operations during harvest, scheduling students and staff for peak efficiency and maximum productivity.
- Instruction & Student Engagement:
- Serve as the instructor for the Viticulture Practicum course, teaching and supervising students in hands-on vineyard management practices.
- Develop and maintain the course syllabus, delivering practical education based on the vineyard's seasonal needs and optimizing student learning outcomes.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to students, ensuring they gain practical vineyard management experience and develop essential skills for success in the industry.
- Equipment & Resource Management:
- Ensure that all vineyard equipment and tools are maintained, serviced, and available for use, minimizing downtime and optimizing productivity.
- Order and manage vineyard supplies, including amendments, pesticides, and vineyard materials, to ensure seamless operation and meet changing needs.
- Keep accurate records of pesticide and chemical usage, as required by Arizona regulations, ensuring compliance and transparency.
- Compliance & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of vineyard operations, pesticide applications, and equipment maintenance, providing valuable insights for decision-making and planning.
- Ensure compliance with Arizona Department of Agriculture regulations, maintaining or acquiring a Pesticide Applicator License as required.
- Promptly report any accidents, equipment malfunctions, or safety concerns to the Director, prioritizing employee and student well-being.
Minimum Expectations & Requirements
- A minimum of 2-4 years of vineyard management experience, with a strong understanding of best practices and industry standards.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills, with the ability to plan and prioritize work effectively, ensuring seamless operation and maximizing productivity.
- Ability to operate various vehicles, equipment, power tools, and hand tools, with a valid Arizona driver's license (or ability to obtain).
- Pesticide Applicator License with the Arizona Department of Agriculture or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to mentor and instruct students, and basic computer skills using Word, Excel, email, etc.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding vineyard tasks, with a focus on safety and well-being.
Preferred Skills & Abilities
- Experience in vineyard education or training in an academic setting, with a passion for sharing knowledge and expertise with others.
- Knowledge of sustainable and organic vineyard practices, with a commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible resource management.
- Proficiency with vineyard management software and data collection tools, with a willingness to learn and adapt new technologies.
Essential Functions
- Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds, with a focus on physical safety and well-being.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, with a commitment to resilience and flexibility.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends during critical vineyard periods, prioritizing productivity and efficiency.
