Position Overview: The MRI Imaging Specialist Trainee will engage in the execution of designated imaging studies and the manipulation of data utilizing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology. This role involves comprehensive training on established protocols while observing and completing MRI training to demonstrate proficiency in all outlined responsibilities. The trainee will operate under the guidance of a registered MRI Technologist.

Work Schedule: This position requires flexibility, with a variable schedule from Monday to Saturday.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Candidates must fulfill the following criteria to be eligible for the MRI Tech Trainee program:
  • Must possess ARRT, NMTCB, or ARDMS registration and be prepared to work rotating shifts as necessary for patient care.
  • Upon successful completion of the Registry examination, candidates may transition into an MRI Technologist role if available.
  • After training, the trainee will conduct thorough screenings of all patients for any contraindications prior to performing MRI scans.
  • Provide education to patients regarding all facets of MRI procedures.
  • Under the supervision of a Proctor, MRI Instructor, or MRI Technologist, the trainee will shadow until deemed capable of independently performing daily MRI scans, adhering to established protocols, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Accurately document patient histories and complete all required paperwork under supervision.
  • Exhibit competence in conducting necessary scans on patients across all age groups.
  • Demonstrate the ability to administer contrast for specific examinations.
  • Carry out quality control processes and evaluate the performance of the processor and magnet scanner daily as assigned.
  • Maintain effective communication within and between departments.
  • Uphold a positive and professional demeanor with patients, physicians, colleagues, and peers.
  • Perform clerical tasks as required.
  • Monitor and manage current departmental inventory.
  • Engage in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Adhere to imaging and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Execute duties in alignment with system-wide competencies and behaviors. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Radiography. If not a graduate of an ARRT accredited program, candidates must be enrolled in an advanced imaging technology training program, having successfully completed phases 1 and 2 of the ARMRIT program.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • ARRT, NMTCB (Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board), or ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) registration is required following the completion of the training program. The maximum duration for program completion is six months, with one possible extension of three months.
  • Candidates must sit for the ARRT examination no later than three or six months after completing the training program.
  • A commitment to remain in the department for two years post-certification and registration is required. Non-compliance may result in reimbursement obligations to UPMC for program-related expenses and/or ineligibility for promotion to MRI Technologist.
  • Failure to pass the examination or complete the course will lead to termination.
  • Current CPR certification is mandatory. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or successful completion of BLS training and certification upon hire is required.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
