Job Summary:

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement region-wide protocols to promote standards of care for patients with or at risk for genetic/congenital conditions.
  • Provide expert consultation with physicians and other healthcare providers to enhance and monitor the quality and level of care for patients affected by or at risk for genetic/congenital conditions.
  • Collaborate with patients, caregivers, and interdisciplinary team members to assist client needs.
  • Develop and implement a plan of care for complex, high-risk patients.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of care plans and revise plans as needed.
  • Create and direct complex analysis of patient/program information from various data sources for program development, risk management, and quality monitoring.
  • Develop culturally sensitive and age-appropriate patient education programs and materials.
  • Provide educational programs for physicians, nurses, laboratory staff, trainees, and other healthcare providers in the community.
  • Serve as a regional or sub-regional specialty resource and provide up-to-date knowledge and management of genetic/congenital disorders and programs.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current activities in genetics and recommend/implement enhanced clinical practice standards for the department and the region.
  • Direct and participate in quality assurance and improvement activities, promoting cost-effective delivery of high-quality patient care/services, improving internal and external customer satisfaction.
  • Identify and promote improved innovative clinical practice based on new knowledge and research in the field of specialization.
  • Initiate and participate in collaborative research projects, written articles, and professional presentations.
  • Form risk estimates and identify at-risk cases.
  • Coordinate and document contacts and follow-up recommendations, including referrals and scheduling of tests/procedures.
  • Utilize resources on a region-wide basis to improve efficiencies, increase communications, reduce redundancy, and improve patient and provider satisfaction.
  • Coordinate and oversee the day-to-day operations for the assigned program.
  • Ensure support staff quality of work.
  • Serve as a preceptor for graduate genetic counseling students and medical residents.
  • Provide input into local and regional policies and guidelines and hiring of new staff.
  • May independently provide genetic counseling services for all areas of medical genetics.
Requirements:
  • Three or more years of experience in Genetic Counseling or a related specialty field.
  • Masters degree in Genetic Counseling.
  • Genetic Counselor License (California).
  • Genetic Counselor Certificate.
  • National Provider Identifier required at hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior clinical genetic specialist/administrative/teaching experience.
  • Previous computer experience.
