Overview

Under general supervision, this role is tasked with the registration of Inpatients, Outpatients, and Ancillary patients in the Emergency Room, ensuring the collection of complete and accurate information for hospital records and timely reimbursement.

This position is crucial for maintaining efficient patient flow and completing the admission process promptly to facilitate immediate treatment.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues, nurses, physicians, and other hospital personnel to ensure workflow efficiency.

Welcomes and assists all customers and visitors, whether in person or via telephone, employing guest relation techniques while professionally embodying the values and vision of AHMC Healthcare.

This position requires a full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of AHMC Healthcare, with an expectation for the employee to demonstrate behavior aligned with the core values of the organization.

The employee is also expected to support AHMC Healthcare's strategic plan, goals, and performance improvement initiatives.

Additionally, the employee will be expected to uphold all organizational standards, including but not limited to: Customer Service, Patient Rights, Confidentiality of Information, Environment of Care, and AHMC Healthcare initiatives.

Responsibilities

Adheres to infection control policies and practices:
Understands and implements standard precautions for self and others during patient care activities.
Practices appropriate disease-specific isolation.
Handles and disposes of sharps (e.g., needles) in accordance with regulations.
Ensures the sterility of supplies and equipment.

Meets population/age-specific competencies:
Attends department-specific education/training, in-services, and staff meetings.
Completes all required paperwork punctually.
Confirms attendance at staff meetings or reading of meeting minutes by signature/initials.

Facilitates patient registration:

Conducts interviews with patients to gather demographic data, utilizing alternative sources when necessary, such as family members or transferring facilities.

Secures all required signatures.
Accurately inputs and updates patient information into the computer system following proper registration protocols.
Ensures all insurance details are collected and verified using available systems. Alerts the Insurance Verifier of any potential insurance or benefit issues. Secures accounts by properly identifying procedures requiring prior authorization and ensuring it has been obtained.
Demonstrates knowledge of third-party payor requirements to support optimal fiscal reimbursement. Ensures financial classes and insurance codes are accurately identified and entered.
Informs customers of their financial responsibilities and collects patient liability amounts, such as deposits, co-pays, and deductibles.
Prioritizes and coordinates essential job functions.
Completes and documents all necessary registration forms.
Obtains eligibility, PCP, and insurance information through available systems and web-based insurance platforms.
Complies with all EMTALA/COBRA ER requirements.

Collects patient responsibilities:
Gathers insurance co-pay amounts from verification and informs the patient.
Utilizes alternative methods when standard procedures do not yield the required information.
Follows up on all registrations when additional information is needed to ensure prompt reimbursement.

Maintains effective patient flow:
Introduces themselves and explains the registration process to the patient. Communicates in a moderate tone and refrains from discussing the patient's condition unless necessary for job-related conversations.
Maintains professionalism during customer interactions and minimizes extraneous conversation to expedite registration.
Adheres to hospital and departmental guidelines and procedures. Adapts to new procedures, processes, and memos as needed.
Shares an equitable percentage of registration volume and completes the registration process within established departmental accuracy standards.

Utilizes customer service skills:
Answers the telephone within three rings in a respectful and pleasant manner. Asks open-ended questions to gather facts and remains calm and polite regardless of circumstances.
Greets all customers and family members courteously and professionally, employing guest relation techniques and confidentiality standards.
Effectively manages upset or potentially distressed customers or patients.

Complies with the Hospital's Attendance and Timekeeping policies.
Must achieve a chart audit pass rate with a minimum of 95% accuracy.Qualifications
Ability to communicate effectively.
Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
Proficient computer and typing skills required.
Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.
General knowledge of third-party payors, with a minimum of 1-2 years of Admitting/Registration or equivalent healthcare experience preferred.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred (as applicable).
