Position Overview:

Under the direct oversight of the Laboratory Management Team, the Certified Phlebotomy Specialist is responsible for performing blood collection procedures, including venipuncture, heel, and finger sticks. This role also involves the operation and maintenance of point-of-care laboratory equipment (CLIA Waived), addressing issues that arise, managing supply inventories, and maintaining accurate records. The specialist is expected to provide exceptional communication to both internal and external laboratory clients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Exhibit proficiency in venipuncture and capillary collection techniques.
  • Possess knowledge in specimen collection, preparation, storage, and disposal, as well as daily temperature monitoring and documentation in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Conduct point-of-care testing, ensuring quality control and accurate record-keeping for CLIA waived tests as per laboratory guidelines.
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills to fulfill departmental requirements, including record maintenance and tracking of health records.
  • Execute patient care tasks as directed by licensed healthcare professionals, adhering to established clinical protocols and procedures within the defined scope of practice.
  • Exhibit the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively, demonstrating flexibility and ensuring accuracy in all work performed.
  • Maintain accountability with minimal supervision while fostering positive working relationships with colleagues and other departments.
  • Ensure cleanliness of the workstation, equipment, and maintain inventory at designated levels.
  • Assist in daily temperature checks and documentation.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and a commitment to high standards, with excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with patients and other stakeholders.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Comply with departmental policies, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • May assist in translation efforts for patients as needed.
  • Willingness to travel to various health sites as required.
  • Maintain current professional licensure and continuing education.
  • Participate in meetings and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Experience:
  • Preferred experience of three months in a medical laboratory setting as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).
  • Preferred completion of 30-40 blood draws.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
Education:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Certifications/Licenses:
  • Current Phlebotomy Certification - California State Licensure.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
  • Preferred: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers.
Working Conditions:

Exposure to various chemicals and specimens, with potential for unpredictable situations.

Risk of exposure to infectious materials from patients.

Frequent prolonged periods of standing and walking.

Occasional irregular hours may be required.

Physical demands include lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs, bending, kneeling, and repetitive hand movements.

Compliance with safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and lab coats, is mandatory.

Universal Requirements:

Pre-employment requirements include verification of identity and employment eligibility, physical examination, background checks, and compliance with vaccination mandates.
