ECU Health Medical Center is a 974-bed academic medical center that serves as the primary teaching hospital for The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

The hospital provides acute and intermediate care, rehabilitation, and outpatient health services to a 29-county region with a population of over 1.4 million people.

Position Summary

Pharmacists at ECU Health are committed to ensuring the safe and effective use of medications through maximizing drug distribution and optimizing drug therapy outcomes.

They educate patients, providers, and themselves on best practices and fully integrate pharmacists into the continuum of care.

Responsibilities

Patient-specific medication management involves reviewing medication profiles, evaluating orders for indication, dose, dosage form, regimen, route, therapeutic duplication, and drug interactions.

Pharmacists ensure the appropriateness of therapy by reviewing patient medication history, assessing patient demographics, recommending formulary alternatives, developing drug monitoring plans, interpreting laboratory data, and monitoring and documenting pharmacokinetics for targeted drugs.

They demonstrate basic competency in applying drug dosing guidelines, clinical lab data, and pharmacokinetic properties to individualize drug therapy.

Pharmacists communicate any drug therapy problems directly with the nurse and/or prescriber and document all drug therapy interventions as appropriate.

They demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age(s) of the patients served.

Pharmacists perform medication histories, medication reconciliation, and discharge counseling as required.

They provide drug information to healthcare professionals and patients.

Pharmacists detect, monitor, document, and report adverse drug reactions and medication errors.

Maintaining good work relationships and handling all communications in a professional manner is essential.

Supervising Pharmacy Technicians in daily work activities and collaborating with the Supervisor as necessary to ensure excellence and professionalism is also required.

Pharmacists accurately dispense investigational drugs according to established protocols and procedures.

Attending department education activities such as Grand Rounds/Noon Conferences, staff meetings, staff development programs, and The Joint Commission (TJC) meetings is necessary.

Completion Requirements

Pharmacists must obtain Continuing Education credits as required by the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy.

They must successfully complete all annual department competency assessments.

Pharmacists must complete the TJC annual requirements and occupational health screening.

They must comply with all state and federal laws and regulations governing the practice of pharmacy.

Pharmacists must follow hospital and departmental policy and procedures.

Maintaining confidentiality of medical records and complying with all applicable state and federal regulations, including HIPAA and HITECH, is essential.

They must support the vision of the Department of Pharmacy.

Pharmacists must embrace and strive to meet and exceed minimum Standards of Performance as outlined by ECU Health.

They must participate in meeting the goals of the department to ensure the attainment of the health system's goals.

Pharmacists must effectively manage their own practice, actively engage in professional self-development, and take a proactive approach to learning.

Fulfilling maintenance requirements for Clinical Ladder Level I is necessary.

Minimum Requirements

A B.S. or PharmD in pharmacy is required.

0 years of relevant pharmacy experience (post-graduate) is required.

Pharmacists must be licensed as a pharmacist by the NC Board of Pharmacy by start date.

They must maintain an active NC pharmacy license and provide proof of renewal prior to December 31 annually.

American Heart Association BLS is required within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Requirements

Hospital experience is preferred.
