Job Summary

We are seeking a qualified applicant for the position of Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for American Sign Language/Deaf Studies. The successful candidate will teach 9 credit hours per semester to a diverse population of learners and through various teaching modalities, face-to-face, virtual, and/or online (day or evening). The candidate will also maintain scheduled office hours, develop and revise curricula, manage course and program assessment of student learning outcomes, participate in service to the college and the school, and assist the Associate Dean with other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching and Instruction:
    • Contribute to the college's mission and goals through effective teaching and instruction.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter through exceptional content delivery, pedagogy, and andragogy through the teaching of ASL and Deaf Studies courses.
    • Provide input for the development of the ASL/Deaf Studies program instruction, standards, and policies.
    • Upload current syllabi, readings, and homework assignments and submit grades on time in Canvas.
    • Maintain attendance records in Banner.
    • Provide guidance to students for academic planning.
    • Incorporate current instructional technologies into the classroom.
    • Provide students with meaningful feedback in a timely fashion.
    • Hold required office hours.
  • Service and Professional Development:
    • Actively participate in college, school, and program coordinators meetings.
    • Serve on college and school committees.
    • Serve as an active member on the ASL/Deaf Studies Advisory Committee.
    • Contribute to student success by advising students from the point of their initial enrollment through graduation.
    • Stay current with, and contribute to, developments in the various fields and disciplines within ASL and Deaf Studies.
  • Coordination:
    • Recruit and recommend adjunct instructors for hire.
    • Enhance the visibility of the ASL/Deaf Studies program by providing leadership and maintaining relationships with community partners.
    • Effectively communicate with students by email, phone, online discussion boards, and face-to-face, as appropriate.
    • Maintain up-to-date and accurate records on student progress and academic achievement.
    • Develop and implement course and program assessment of student learning outcomes.
Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in ASL or related field
  • Proficiency in ASL and native or native-like signing skills
  • Strong foundation of ASL pedagogy
  • Extensive knowledge of Deaf culture
  • Three years of full-time teaching experience in a college/university setting
  • Administrative experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • ASLTA certification (American Sign Language Teachers Association) or ASLPI score of 4.0 or higher (American Sign Language Proficiency Interview)
  • Five years of ASL college teaching experience
