Position: Superintendent, Stevedoring
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Superintendent is responsible for offering leadership and direction to supervisors and team members. This role involves assisting in the organization of daily operations and guiding personnel to ensure accurate, efficient, and timely service delivery, effective inventory management, and responsive customer service. Training on company policies and operational procedures is also a key responsibility.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains oversight of all operational facets, ensuring effective communication between management, supervisors, and all production and support staff.
- Identifies training needs and guarantees that all team members have the necessary technical proficiency and understanding of their roles and performance expectations.
- Schedules and reallocates personnel to optimize work teams and initiates cross-training to meet productivity objectives.
- Ensures accurate documentation and records of employee performance, safety compliance, and other relevant metrics.
- Conducts performance reviews, recommends salary adjustments, and manages disciplinary actions as needed.
- Ensures adherence to safety, sanitation, and security protocols.
- Initiates maintenance requests and reports equipment or facility needs.
- Collaborates with the Port Captain and/or Cargo Officer regarding stowage, loading, and unloading operations.
- Regularly inspects loading and unloading equipment to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- As part of the management team, undertakes additional projects or responsibilities as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in supervising personnel across various cargo types, particularly breakbulk.
- Ability to operate and train others on various crane types.
- Knowledge of specialized rigging and cargo handling equipment.
- Strong communication skills.
- Capability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
- Proven excellent safety record.
- Aptitude for training new staff members.
- Ability to inspire and enhance team morale.
- Experience in supervision, training, and holding team members accountable for their performance.
- Background in warehouse operations and stevedoring.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
COMPETENCIES:
- Verbal Comprehension: Ability to understand both oral and written communications, including technical information.
- Communication Skills: Capable of providing clear instructions and guidance.
- Reasoning Skills: Proficient in problem-solving and troubleshooting.
- Time Management: Values and manages time effectively, prioritizing a wide range of activities.
- Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The role requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, handling objects, reaching, and communication activities. Occasionally, the associate may need to stoop, bend, kneel, and lift or move up to 35 lbs. While primarily office-based, the position involves regular visits to warehouse and outdoor environments.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Minimal travel expected (0%-10%).
